Hey guyz...my first time here. Great site =D..kudos to webmaster
I own a 1989 F150 2wd with the I-6 (love that engine hehe). Unfortunately, that 6 has a ton of miles on it, and them some. It's about to die I have aquired a free 302 engine with transmission bolted on already..(well, not really free...my newly-found father bought it for me pretty cheap) I believe it came out of a wrecked truck. I don't know much about it, other than it's free, and it is supposed to run.
Given that my poor 6cyl is about to die off, I'm going to swap it whenever I can dedicate some time to this project. So I come here, because well...I'm way in over my head I believe. Basically...what am I going to need to change? Will I need to change computers/wiring harnesses...and how will my Driveshaft bolt up..will I need to get a new one? I wasn't sure if it would fit or not.
Also, when I do swap it, I'm going to go ahead and throw a 50 series Flowmaster Muffler on it and brand new exhaust package. Should I get headers or not even bother?
Take all this in consideration that I've only done one engine swap...and it was with my step-dad back when I was a kid
Basically I'm wondering..am I getting in over my head? I'm thinkin it won't be a huge deal...I can dedicate a few weeks 8hours a day to it if it's necessary (and my luck always indicates it will be necessary lol)
I'm really gonna miss my 6cyl lol...but havin the highway power will be a huge plus for me.
Thx for the help in advance..any tips are greatly appreciated. I can try and get whatever extra information you need ASAP too =D
Hmm...to be quite honest...I'm not sure. My original Transmission went out, and I had a friend of a friend put another in from a junkyard. It worked, so I didn't check what it was or anything about it. Plus..cash was a huge problem, so I had to go junk-yard. But it's a different tranny than my original. It shifts way different...like shifting outta 2nd (when floored) at 75 vs 60. How can I check? Yes, I know...I'm a noobie
you probably have the c6 then.as long as you use the same tranny that is in it now you can use the same drive shaft. as far as the engine swap goes, you will need to find the engine stands that bolt to the cross member for a 302 or 351w, as the stands for the I-6 are different. do you plan on keeping the fuel injection or going to carb???
I'm plannin on going with the fuel injection...the 302 has everything on it, which I'll switch out a few things here and there..like the alternator, and will update all the small stuff like Dist cap, wires, plugs, Thermostat.
The 302 comes with an automatic tranny already bolted up to it. My current transmission is about to go out I think, so I'm hoping that one is good. If I go with that one, will I need to get a new driveshaft?
