Wife's 99 EB Expedition (5.4L auto, 4x4) is having some serious problems. Starts ok, significant miss and vibration at idle and when driving. Check engin e light is on. Power seems to still be there, but the miss is definite.
Innitial thought is coil pack. How hard are they to test? Can I treat it like standard plug wires and unplug them one at a time from the harness and see which ones cause it to get worse, and which one has no change? Is it easier/cheqper to just have a shop read the codes?
If you have an Auto Zone nearby, they will run an OBD II diagnostic free of charge. It sounds like a plug misfire. There are some other recent threads in this forum regarding misfires.

DRM,
It's a real PITA!. If you don't have the necessary tools, forget about trying to tackle this thing by yourself. It helps to have a relative who is a mechanic! It only cost me for the plugs and a couple of beers! . So I saved a couple of hundred if I had to go the dealer or shop!
We had to take off the fuel rails, (to get the rear packs off), the air filter and hose, and since it was such a mess on the passenger side with all the hoses, etc we took off the electrical box that has the main lines coming from the battery off for more room.
All in all it took a couple of hours, but my expy started right up and is purring like a kitten again with 112k miles on her.
Good luck, btw, I used Motorcraft OEM plugs with no problems.
You might want to read a few days back....it might be that water is leaking onto the #7 coil/plug.....check it for water....one of the other Expi owners posted a very easy fix.
Hey DRM - That number 4 coil pack usually goes bad due to a leak in the heater hose directly above it and along the firewall. For has had problems with those and while the leak seems to very small in size, it seems to land directly on the #4 coil pack. Might want to check that hose. Usually it is right at the end of the hose where the leak is and you can cut a few inches off the hose, pull on, and tighten the clamp.
