One of my friends owns a really nice F250 with a 7.3 powerstroke
and he would like to have a little more performance as he usually tows quite a bit.
He already has a 3.5 inch exhaust if im not mistaking and he was considering raising the boost with the help of a bleed valve like a turbosmart...only 2-4 lbs tops...a dual stage with a low/high boost setting would be the item of choice.....keep in mind he does not want to chip his truck...
at the same time we will add a pyrometer and a boost guage of course to make sure everything is fine.
Since I know nothing about diesels....I would like to know if it is an option worth considering.....
How much boost does a 7.3 L run stock.....how much will it run safely ......
and what is the normal exhaust gas temperature for a diesel like the 7.3 L....
You say your friend installed a 3.5" exhaust, then I think were talkin about a pre 99' truck?
Stock the wastegate limits you to about 17psi. There is no need for a boost controller or anything else like on a gasser, just simply unplug the wastegate, or plug it. You can use a set screw or ball bearing and stick it in the wastegate hose then plug it back it. This will give ya about 2-3psi more on the top end.
Pyro, depents on where you put it, I would recommend pre-turbo, which would read I think 500-600 normally.

My question is.....will a bleed valve work fine to increase boost and how much boost can you run safely on a 7.3 on stock fueling system and maping
thanks in advance!!!

Unlike on a gasser turbo the wastegate on a PSD has very little use. In a diesel boost is made by adding more fuel and unhooking the wastegate without adding more fuel won't do anything more than allow the turbo to spool a bit quicker. It will not add any horsepower at all (it will feel a bit stronger due to the faster spoolup).

Like fordman said, it'll make around 17 stock. 25 is the manufacturers limit on the stock turbo, but that is next to impossible on the stock fuel map. You might see 20-22 with the W/G disconnected.
Welcome to the site mx3jmcb, we need to know what year truck this is, also trans, miles, configuration, and weight of what is being towed would be helpful. Like was said earlier if your friend upgraded to 3.5" exhaust then it is most likely a pre 99. All 94.5-97 PSD with stock turbos didn't have a waste gate. In stock form these run about 15-19 psi of boost. Stock you will set a check engine light at about 22# of boost. I have a 96 with a chip and I can make over 30# of boost if I want. 2-4# increase of boost is not a very big gain, in fact you might not tell by seat of the pants. You might try www.ford-trucks.com since they are very performance orientated group of people.
