I recently purcahsed a 2000 F-250 Superduty (CC/4X4/LB) with 51,000 miles. The problem is none of the door locks work. I can hear them trying to work but they won't lock or unlock the doors. To me it seems like they aren't getting enough power, is there some sort of relay that could be bad? Also the guy who owned it before me had an aftermarket alarm added which is supposed to lock and unlock the doors, do you think that could have been installed incorrectly? Thanks for any advice.
Had the same problem, quite common. Go to the dealer and purchase new activators, they're around $45 apiece. Ford won't stand behind their product but the new ones have a better (stronger) motor. Remove the door panels and about 1/2 way down the side opposite the lock, you'll feel the activator. Pull it towards you and it should come loose ( or break it loose with a hammer and a large screwdriver) then remove the linkage and attached it to the new activator. The new activator will slide into place with a guide on the top and bottom already built into the inside of the door. You'll get scraped knuckles but it will only take about 2 hours to replace all four.
Just out of curiosity guy's I have the same problem on my 99, most of the time they open but about 3 out of 10 times they too seem to not have enough power to unlock. My question is why did these things all of a sudden go out at the same time(both doors)? I only have an extended cab and both of my front doors acted up at the same time. It is very cold up here this time of year and it does it more when it gets cold. I do have a manual and I read that there is two relay's. The (drivers unlock relay) and the (all unlock relay). The relays seem to be working though cause both doors try to unlock just like speedn 'ian said. Oh well I haven't gotten a chance to take my multimeter and test the relays yet but I will let you know what I find out. Thanks for the advise scotto97, you probably have the right answer for us. I'll keep ya posted.
I had one door lock act up on my '99PSD. Took to dealer to replace with new one. About one week later it started to act the same way, took it back to dealer and he said it was a common problem. The actuators will bind up and not work properly. Readjusted the new actuator and have been fine since. Now I wonder why he didn't adjust the old actuator??
Thanks for the info tommyl, I'll pull my panels off and see if I can do some adjusting. If not, I have to pick up some new actuators I guess. Thanks for the help guy's.
I installed a remote start with keyless entry in my 2002 F-250 recently and found out that you only have lock/unlock relays in superdutys if you have the factory keyless entry. If you don't have factory keyless entry, you don't have door lock relays. Save you a little time instead of searching for something that is not in the truck.
You are right, they don't exist on the non keyless entry trucks. I do though, have the KE system. I believe my actuators are either gummed up or just plain shot. They have ben working the last couple of days but it's been above zero finally for a week or so.
