Fuel Mileage for 4.6 and the 5.4.
#2
97 4.6 windsor supercab auto, 2wd and 3.55 rearend. i check the mileage about once every 3 months. when i check the mileage, I fill the tank until fuel is lapping the gas filler top, and when nearly empty i fill the tank again until the fuel laps the top of the filler tube (some say this risks damage to the fuel canniser evaporative system but i have never had a problem. Will admit this procedure is not the best from enviromental standpoint as it does let some amt of vapor into the atomosphere. But if you really want to know accurate mileage, it is a must to completely fill the tank). Last weekend i drove houston to southern arkansas and back. Slight wind, a few hills, some light rain, and i used cruise to drive at about 2 miles over the posted speed limit--speed limit varied from 60 to 65 to 70mph (most of the trip was at 70). I checked the mileage on the return trip and i drove 408 miles and used 23.54 gallons of gas or 17.3 mpg. On previous highway tests i have ranged between high 16's to low 18's depending on speed, weather, load and terrain. Same tests but driving only in town (stop and go traffic ranging on up to 25 or 40 mph) yield mpg between 14 mpg and low 15's. I've done these tests since i bought the truck new and results are very consistent. Once i did hit 18.9 mpg on a road trip but that was with a tail wind on absolutely flat ground. Truck is bone stock, well maintained with 161,000 miles.

It's listed in my signature, anyway.... 99 F150 Supercab 4x4 5.4/auto. Currently runs 235/75R16. Only thing I have done to it is add a soft tonneau cover. I use the Lucas Oil Stabilizer, don't really know if that helps the mileage or not. I do mostly highway driving. The speeds range from 35-65. I cut back the topspeed from 75. That helped. I filled up this a.m. and this is what I got... 389.9 miles divided by 21.4 gallons added = 18.21 mpg average. I also drive up then down a pretty long steep mountain, and the reverse coming home from work, 5 times a week. I do the recommended fill up routine in the owners manual. Something like fill up until auto shutoff activates, then two more auto shutoffs and call it good. I have my eye on some BFG AT's 285/75R16's to add in the next couple of weeks. I will reply with changes that I am sure will happen to my mileage.

Hi,
See my signature for engine etc. Everything is stock.
During the summer with maybe 70 highway and 30 percent city, I averaged around 17. This winter with maybe 70 percent city and 30 percent highway and some idle time needed to defrost in the morning I am just barely getting 15.
Notice I have a manual and I generally try to keep my foot off the gas but sometimes, I just gotta go for it.
I am still looking to get 18 mpg. Maybe this summer on a trip with the truck engine broken in -- currently pushing 11k on the odo.

No one buys a truck for fuel economy
...
(mind you it does help a little when hitting those hard months). :P
I came from a 1993 Mazda B2200 and a 1998 Jeep TJ Sport 4.0L, and I'm not getting much worse than my TJ. The headgasket in my mazda was cooked (and then some), so the mazda wasn't much better on gas than the jeep *grin*.
I have a 1998 XLT Supercab 4.6 (averaging 13-15 mpg all around).

i drive pretty normal, acceleration wise, but sometimes it just feels good to really jump on those horses!!! am i wrong???
my mods include dual flomaster 3 chamber intake (purr), and k&n cold air intake system...
the mufflers were already on it, but i put on the intake, it helped about .5 mpg as far as i have gauged
