think i've been over all the alternatives and was pretty set on the cordoba setup, but it is difficult to come accross mopars lately for all the parts. think i missed them being excitedly squashed by 5-10 years. if a guy was looking into the mII, can u pont me in the direction of a thread i am sure that is on here about using the stock mII in a 53-56 effie, i know a guy who had a 46 merc sedan that notched his frame n dropped the whole car in the stock crossmember, i am sure that a effie must have a different width, so if a guy was to get the aftermarket crossmember, rotors and calipers, he would need the stock springs rack and upper n lower a arms and the spindles, i thought i read in the fatman brochure that u widen the stock rack for the f100 width? is that right? i was trying to figure if it was as cost friendly since the ford donors are more available. by using as many junkyard parts as possible. what is the frame width on a mustang? in comparison to a f100? any body tried it, i am kinda shooting in the dark because i havent done much leg work to find out. just figuring typing is easier than cutting&welding tonight...lol
If you think finding Mopar suspensions is tough, finding original MII parts is even tougher. The last year for Mustang/Pinto parts is the 1980 Pinto. At least the Mopar torsion bar suspensions were made up until 1989.
You definitely DO NOT want to use a stock MII crossmember in a 53-56 truck. The front suspension under a 53-56 is around 61 inches and as I remember the stock MII is somewere around 54-55 inches...one of the narrowest track widths around. I used a stock crossmember under a 32 Ford years ago before the crossmembers were so readily available and it was pretty narrow even for a 32 Ford. You can still find used MII components around, but they are getting scarce. Many parts like spindles, upper and lower control arms, and rebuilt racks are being reproduced, but that drives the installation cost up. If you go the MII route, you need to buy the crossmember made just for your truck and then you can scrounge around for the components. Ebay is a good source...
i just remember seeing a few mustangs around at u pull r parts and we have a yard out here the guy deals strictly in ford stuff, he has trailers of the stuff and a farm field of everything u can imagine for 1940's to 1990. he has a lot of the little detail stuff, and a few rarities but not too much for handles n ***** for 53-56. a lot of 60's cars and seventies trucks and a few stangs. i think all the ford guys in town know joes..lol. he has it all. i might have to drive out a ways into the country but i might still go with the cordoba, this was just a afterthought, most of the yards in the city only keep the newer stuff they can make money on, n crush everything over 12-15 years old. the cordoba torsion bar suspension uses seventies stuff? i know what i will need to know will be in the stuff i asked for from gibbonf100
well I am in arkansas. I have a dode diplomat 1983 I believe with a 318 and transmission still in it. I would be willing to sell it to you. email me or call me at 870-799-3129
kinda far away, thanks , i am in mn. i will just have to get out the phonebook n start calling around up north to new london/wilmar n south to fairbault or iowa. isnt that year diplomat the volare type of clip? i already have a cleveland and a built c4 and a few rears, the stock and a 9in. i would go with the volare but i didnt want to cut up the frame and i wanted the same stock bolt pattern as the rears.
i got the brochure today from gibbon and i must say that i was excited by the pictures n details...lol. i am just going to have to get my boots full of snow n try to go out n trudge in the deep stuff to see what i can find.
I put mkII in my 53. aftermarket crossmember. started with stock arms ect then bought air ride from Ziggs and an extended rack unit. Cheapest way to go. $469 for airride including lower arms $185 for rack. The air ride is made by TCI and is an awesome setup. still have stock mkII stuff.
i am sure there r many who havent, but a few of the guys i talked to who had air ride had problems with it mostly in the compressor n in leaks, though the ride was better when it worked. not saying all have problems, they might have had bad components or something. i want to keep it as simple as possible and it respectfully isnt how i picture my dream of a finished rig, i want to go old school on it n i doubt it will ever get out of the black suede n baby moon hubs n rappin pipes. about the only flashy thing i am planning is a built cleveland and a ifs b/c i want the upgrade v/s dumping money into the straight axle, even though all i need is brakes. but i want to corner n stop like a pro.
