I just bought a 98 ranger about a month ago and I remember when I was test driving it before I bought it, the "check engine" light was on. When i got back to the dealer the guy said that it was just an 02 sensor warning and it was no big deal and he quickly used some gadget to get the light to come off. I didn't think much of it at the time, but now im wondering what that ment, and why it was on? Im getting horrible gas mileage, could a problem with the 02 sensor be a reason why? thanks...
Yes, a bad O2 sensor could cause problems with mileage. It sounds like they just reset the CEL, I bet it will be back on. What kind of mileage are you getting, engine, tranny, 2 or 4wd?
very crappy mileage, like 10-11 mpg... My engine is a 3.0 , 6 cyl, 4wd. Is it a simple problem to fix? it seems like it is if its just a sensor, but I really don't know at all..
Yeah, o2 sensors are like 50 bucks or more per sensor, and correct me if im wrong, but i think the 98 uses 3 of them. I know for sure my 94 uses 2. So it actually IS a big deal, at least 3 oxy sensors x 60$ a piece = about 180$ not counting all the money you lost from driving around getting 10 mpg. I'd take it back and make them correct the problem they knew was there when you bough the truck!
