Question When Cold @ Start...Tranny no work

I am having a strange problem with my transmission when I start the truck in the morning. The morning temp is usually in the teens or low twenties. I start the truck and try to put it into gear and it just sits there as if still in neutral. Once the tranny warms up a bit (or the tranny fluid actually) the transmission clicks into gear. When the truck is warm on a normal warm day, the cold starting is fine and it goes right into gear. So, something from the cold is making this happen. Once the truck kicks into gear, its pretty much smooth from there.

Does it really need to warm up, or just rev the engine a bit and it will drop in. That is what mine does (occationally). But our cold (in LA) is around 40 deg. It will drop into gear when you take the RPMs up a bit. What model, year and tranny do you have?

Make sure you trans fluid is fully topped off. It would also help to know what year your Explorer is (I suspect it's a 91-94).

I guess you would need more information...

Its a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0. I've got it scheduled for a flush next week and was wondering if it may be something else. If its a warm day, above 40, the tranny has no problem on start up and drive away. When is sits at night, around 10 to 30 degrees, I have the problem. The tranny fluid reads a tad above the line on the stick....so I was wondering if that could be causing it. I know a tranny works on pressure levels to slip into gear and turn the wheels, so I took a guess and thought it may be the level of the ATF causing this problem. When the truck does get into gear, there's no problem from there for the length of the drive. The 4 hi and 4 lo also work fine, as tested in the snow recently.

Since you are going to have the flush done, are you going to have the filter changed as well?

Does that year have a vacum modulator? If it does, that might be leaking fluid into the vacum system.

When and if you figure it out, would please post your results. I'm fighting the same problem, and it has me sctratching. I've gone as far as had the dealer replace the Valvebody to no avail. It is so intermittent that the dealer could not duplicate after 2 weeks.

pull a vacum hose off of the vacum tree and see if there's any fluid in there. If there is, the problem is most likely the vacum modulator on the transmission (assuming of course that your year has a VM).

I'm not going to have the filter replaced because it had been done a year and half ago when I had to have the torque convertor and flywheel changed. It was a strange thing, but the flywheel cracked right off the torque convertor...But thats the only proplem I;ve had with the truck in 115,000 miles.

After I get the truck back and give it the test on a cold start, I'll post if it is still happening. If it is, I'll try the suggestions some of you have proposed. Thanks for all your help Ford group

Explorer Transmission Problems

I just read your post about your transmission problems. I am experiencing the same problem. I have a 96 4wd with automatic transmission. I have changed the filter and fluid at 35k,65k and 99k. After the last change, I immediately noticed that after the vehicle sets all night it is difficult to get the transmission egaged unless I rev up the engine. During the day while its warm, I never have a problem. What do you finally do to fix yours?
