Thinking of doing away with the smog pump on my 88 300 I6,mabey trying to go out on me. Anyone ever had one hang up time to time? Could I by-pass it w/ a shorter belt or gut it? Any shared info. would be grateful.
scsmitty78, what size belt did you use? My a/c is allready by-passed w/ a shorter belt. I just un hooked the hose from it today and it is quieter and it seems that there is a little more power. Allready gutted one cat,& thinking of doing the same to the other. Not really worried about them.
I cant remember off the top of my head on the length. All I did was cut my worn out belt then route it around where it needed to go. Then I marked it and measured the length. Hope that helps you.
Seems like 82" worked on my '91 w/o A/C. Can't remember for sure though.
Just go to NAPA with a wrench to pull back the tensioner so you can get the belt on and off. Then ask them if you can try different length belts. The one that fit was just a touch long and the tensioner was almost at the end of its travel but it was OK and the next shorter one was way too short.
if I take it right out what do i do with the hoses? I would like to take it out and move the altenator up to that bracket. (I like water alt doesnt) that would put it almost a foot higher and farther from the flood
any help would be great
thanks
