Lights flicker all the time

Lights flicker all the time

I have a 1980 van with a 351M and all my lights flicker when the engine is running. I took the alternator out and had it checked, but the output reads ok. The amp guage needle also jumps back and forth about the distance of the width of the line. Is there a voltage regulator I should check or anything else?

Sounds to me like the voltage regualtor is bad. It's mounted in front of the battery, behind the grill.

Not a mechanic ...but I had a similar experience with my 1992 ranger when it was first delivered. If you have fuses under the hood ...check to make sure they are all tightly secured in the slot. Took the DM from Ford to find that one!

Thanks for the help on this. I replaced the voltage regulator and works like it should. I also noticed that one of the connectors on the old voltage regulator was very rusty. This probably had a lot to do with the problem.
