Any help on this situation would be much appreciated.
I have a 99 f250psd 4x4. While changing my brake pads this weekend, I noticed a slight fluid leak coming from the drivers side front axle seal. I generally do my own mechanic work, but have never messed with the 4x4 front end. Does anyone know how much is envolved in changing this, and if there are any special tools necessary. My truck has 145000 miles on it, and has been used on a cattle ranch so I am not especially suprised to see this. I enjoy a good project every now and again, but I do not want to find myself cursing at my truck all weekend.
I am not sure which is which. I first thought that the fluid was brake fluid from the caliper, but my caliper is not leaking. The pumpkin is full of fluid, but I can see where fluid has soaked into the grease and dirt on the running gear. It seems to be coming from where there the axle goes into the housing that holds the pumpkin??? does this make sense
Thats the inboard seal,a the cause is usually a u-joints getting tired causes the axle to whip a little.
Its a pretty tough job for some guys ,because the front diff has to have the cover taken off to remove the axle shaft to put new seal in,plus all the out board stuff has to be removed also to pull the axle out..
I'm not saying you couldn't do it,but you'll need a manual to help
Thanks... Any special tools needed to do the job, and is there anyhting that I shoud do while I have everything apart. I am not afraid of taking the thing apart.. I did the rear axle seal on my 96 f250 last year. The biggest pain in the A$% was getting the brake drum assembly back together. Once I mastered that I was ok.
The only real seal for gear oil is next to the differential the inboard seal is only for dust and doesn't really do anything else..Both inoard and out board seals can be replaced without touching the diff cover cause the axles come right out. The inner seals near the diff are a pain cause the diff has to come out to replace them
are the axle seals in our trucks notorious for bieng bad?
i've had my truck in the shop for the axle seals 2 times. outer seals once on front left, and the other time it was inner left and outer right at the same time.
