I was assembling the 223 for my truck and trying to get the distributor set in place with the rotor pointing to the post for the number one cylinder in the distributor cap. With the engine at TDC, it wouldn't line up. It would always end up between posts. I wonder if the points cam has moved.
I took it apart and relocated the cam on the distributor cam so that it lines up on the right edge of the post when the points start to open. Hopefully that will solve the problem. (Right edge because the vacuum advance will move it right to left. At full advance it ends up on the left edge of the post when the points start to open.)
Now the problem is that I can't get the danged gear back on the shaft. The holes for the rivet never did line up and now I can't get a roll pin to go all the way through.
Sounds like the hole is egged out on the shaft. It's possible to drill a new one but I wouldn't try it without a drill press to keep everything lined up when drilling. Maybe a rebuilt dizzy is in order.
