New distributor and setting the timing

Let's say that I have taken out my old distributor from my 351W and rotated the crank and I now need to line up a new distributor.

I have a mark on my distributor base where the #1 piston wire connects to. But then I was thinking about the rotor in my distributor that has an electrode end that is about 1/2" wide (the side on the right here: http://static.summitracing.com/globa...acf-f426_w.jpg).

When the rotor rotates in the distributor, what is considered 0 degreed, TDC? Is it when the leading edge of the electrode starts to cross the #1 wire? Or is it when the electrode is lined up in the middle of wire #1?

I am trying to figure out how to determine if I got the right tooth on the cam gear when inserting the new distributor so I can set the proper timing.

Thanks.

All you need to do is have it at TDC on the comp stroke , then drop the dist in so the tip of the rotor is pointing at the # 1 on the cap , and you still have room to move the base of the dist to set the timing , the rotor will turn when it slides on to the cam gear , it dosn't mater what tooth its on as long as you have room to turn it to set the timing , if its to close then pull it up and move over one tooth....

Almost Brian. I put it in last weekend, need to put on a few more things and then see if it runs.

When you coming to CO?

Trips are hard to do when I have a truck that I'm trying to finish and a 6 month old, so I'm hoping in the next 8-10 months things will be back to normal

Lew-

The motor started up but something isn't right. When I adjust the distributor so the motor runs well, my timing light doesn't flash. If I start to retard the timing, the timing light flashes and I can see the TDC mark but the engine dies. After this started happening, I pulled the codes and I get: 10, 11o, 96c.

Any ideas what is happening here, why the timing light doesn't work when I think it should?

I don't know about the codes , but the timing light could be bad , or the # 1 wire isnt firing , or a bad conection at the battery ...

Ok, well I thought about it some more (after I asked a couple friends if they have a light I can borrow - they don't) and I have a dial on the back of the timing light where I can set an advance. I think that is the problem. I had it originally set to 0 but it moved as I was using the light.

I'll put a piece of tape on it and try again tomorrow, I have everything put away now and have guests coming over. The wife left me so I have more time during the week to work on this.
