edelbrock make a dual mass air flow throttle body with bigger inlets for that motor and then you could put on headers and a dual exhaust setup of your choice. magnaflow mufflers sound nice and outflow flowmasters. if you put an h pip to connect the 2 pipes then that would give you some more torque too.

I recently installed a 3" single exhaust muffler system and I could feel my engine breath a big sigh of relief as if to ask me "What took you so long?"

I've done some mods to my 302 powered truck and can tell ya what worked for me. Diablo chip (nice increase) - K&N drop in filter with opened up airbox - Ford Motorsport shorty headers (good sound and power increase) - Ford Motorsport underdrive pullies- (excellent power increase for the money)

The sky is the limit for bolt on mods.

I'm pretty sure that Edelbrock no longer makes the Dual Throttle body for the 5.8. The same unit is available from BBK though. I would wait until I had done several other mods before you put in the larger throttle body such as... Chip, K&N, electric fans, Edelbrock truck intake manifold, headers, better crossover with free flow cat and upgraded exhaust are great power adders.

coated JBA headers, Bassani Y pipe and the cat back flowmaster exhaust are a good start....

then you can go with the K and N air filter....and perhaps a diablo chip....

under drive pullies are a compromise of crankshaft torque and cooling/alternator function....

Yea, I agree with Capone on the underdrive pullies, your better off trying to make HP other places, you might have trouble at idle with alt output and or cooling.

Hey Capone, did you get your Bassani Y pipe? I see it listed as a soon to be. I have it with the Bassani equal length shorties. Its a nice improvement with a free flow cat and upgraded exhaust also. I did have the JBA firecones, but I have better performance with the equal lengths.

Yes...I got it installed along with the JBA headers already on there....

I had to have it thermal barrier coated for maxiumun scavenging and also so it wouldn't screw up the tension frame assembly bushing....

I also wanted the heat contained so the trans didn't get unecessary heat transferred to it....as a result...the cat warms up a bit faster.....the truck a very peppy....good throttle response...and overall the mods have increased mileage (when I take it easy)

I do have to readjust the valves because the engine is run in and there is a slight miss...at idle...I imagine one lifter was adjusted too tight....

All mods mentioned here are good upgrades....however...they are costly...there is no simple bolt on stuff that will give you a 25% increase without spending some money....

Heads would also be a nice addition. I would go with either Edelbrock performer or AFR 165 or 185 (depending on engine size and purpose)

A trans go shift kit would also make the shifts firmer...

Capone- did you have the Y pipe coated also? That sounds like a good idea. I might think about that one. How about your ignition system, any changes there?

Yea, theres no cheap way of obtaining a signifigant increase in horsepower, if you use many of the suggestions, you will then see a significant gain in HP.

Definitly put in the shift kit too, thats a very good performance gain. Along with added tranny life.

For an alternate opinion, save your money and put it towards some type of forced induction. It will cost more but you will also make more hp and tq in the process, you would probably get a chip with the supercharger and headers would only make things better in the future. Just a thought, later

JW is right on the money.....but with a supercharger you must make sure the engine is in good condition.....as with other mods...the motor will only be as strong as its weakest link....and a supercharger will expose the weak link....
trust me...

As far as my Y pipe, I got both headers and the Y pipe coated inside and out......and yes....it does make a difference!!!Heads, intake, oilpan, trans oil pan, radiator tanks, timing cover, thermo cover are also coated with heat dispersant coating.

Pistons crowns, valves, exhaust are coated with thermal barrier coating. Piston skirts are coated with dry film lube coating.

Back to Mike.....

Figure out where you want to spend your money first...then get back to us...

Supercharging system usually runs $2500-3000
cylinder heads usually run
Edelbrocks $1100
AFRs $1200 for the 165's $1800+ for the 185's(depending on options)
Intakes usually run about $500-600
roller rockers $150-300
hardened pushrods $100-160
FRPP Shortblock (5.8) $1500-2000
If your radiator is weak...go get a Modine aluminum unit for about $160
trans go shift it (installed) $240-260
JBA headers with coating $500
Bassani Y pipe $300

Hey Capone,

Is that the SVO shortblock? I guess they have went up in price. I got mine in 99 from Gromm Racing in San Jose and Paid about $1000, but every thing has gone up since then.

You are the coating King! I might get my Y pipe done. Is there anyone around here that does it, or does it have to be shipped somewhere?

Mike, coated long tube headers, and a dyno-tuned computer.

The underdrive pulleys are a really bad idea for a truck. The K&N filter is an even worse idea; it lets more dirt into your engine. K&N admits that it does. Guys on the Lubrication forum have proven it with oil analysis. If you need less restriction in your inlet system, get an airbox that will fit a bigger air filter.

Synthetic oil give more power, better mileage, a cooler running engine, and a longer lasting engine. It performs much better in extreme conditions and it lasts longer. WalMart sells synthetic oil changes with a MotorCraft oil filter for a very good price.

First thing I'd do is to read the computer codes and make sure everything is working right. Then clean or replace the injectors and maybe replace the HEGO with a top quality part.

Then maybe an MSD or Jacobs ignition upgrade.

I like the thermal barrier on the cross-over pipe idea, too. Keeps the cats cleaner.

94, long time no talk...I just ran into this thread. The shortblock was a stock ford shortblock with the valve relief flat top pistons. I went with a hydraulic rollercam from camreasearch corporation and link style roller lifters. I also went with comp cams Cmoly roller rockers.

The truck ran fine but it's been in the shop awaiting an AOD upgrade for better mileage.

Ignition upgrades...I kept the ford duraspark system but I upgraded the coil to a mallory. I also upgraded the plug wires to high end MSD. The injector upgrade using the Gen 3 explorer injectors was a great upgrade, idle quality is so much better as is throttle response.

The rest of the exhaust was installed as a single 3in with high flow magnaflo cats so it's CA legal.

I also installed the BBK Throttlebody assy.

WHen I get it beck from the AOD upgrade, I will install a mass airflow mustang ECU and have my nephew tune it.

I can't wait to dyno the truck.

Unless you replaced the upper and lower intake, the throttle body's going to net you zero in gains. The restriction on a 351 is the lower intake. They have smaller ports than the 302's got.
