how hard and expensive would it be for me to get over 300 rear wheel horses out of my 390? i want my truck to haul butt for racing i just wanted something a little different than anyone else around here, im used to building chevys for racing and fords stock so im a little loss on adding power to my 390, what kind of power am i gonna be looking at with an edelbrock performer rpm intake, comp 288 cam, triple valve springs, ported and polished heads bigger valves 750 holley double pumper headers, and an aftermarket ignition with msd 6al ignition sytsem on it. and does anyone know any other combos i can use to add power i also will be running a 150 horse shot of NOS on it and replies will be appreciated, and also does anyone know where I can get an ford engine specs book
i dont know where you can get a ford engine spec book but here are some siteshttp://web.ics.purdue.edu/~stanchfi/specs.html , http://www.carnut.com/specs/gen/ford60.html , these sites have 390 engine specs
I think with that setup you'll be pushing well above 300 hp without the NOS, with it, heh, you'll have a beast. Is that Comp 288 the roller cam? Because that thing'll haul ... if it is.
Be sure you beef up the valve train. Get a stronger rocker shafts, rocker stands, and end stands. I would suggest against aluminum rockers, as they tend to fatigue and break. A good place to get FE stuff is DSC Motorsports.
For 300 rear wheel horsepower the number you are shooting for is about 400 crankshaft horsepower. This can also be thought of as about 1HP per cubic inch on a .030 over 390. That is a fairly easy to accomplish number. I may get some flames here, but I would think you could do that with stock heads. A little massaging and it's a certainty. The combo you mentioned will do it. Be sure to compensate with your compression ratio when you run a cam with that much duration or it'll be a dog. Not much else you can do. You've covered the basics, air in and air out.
With a mild 390 and a 150shot of NOS, you should be very near 300 RWHP depending on your drivetrain. I think you'd be there in a 2wd manual tranny setup easy. You start running a C6 auto and Dana 60 axles, and the power robbing begines.
With the hardware you are talking about, I think 350HP is attainable.
