Smelling Gas

The vehicle is a 78 LTD, it has a 408 with flat top pistons, milled heads, Edelbrock performer cam, eddy intake and 600 cfm card. This combo can propel the old lead sled to 138 mph, but when I have the pedal mashed to the floor a very strong gas smell is present. I have had the car so long I am used to it and don't even smell it any more, but my wife smells it. Any thoughts on why it smells so strong. I can live with the smell but the ball and chain can't. Thanks

Sanders

A sidenote: going 138 mph in an old LTD is not recomended, it redefines the word "floating"

Check for rust holes into the interior that would admit exhaust fumes. Also check for an overly rich condition in the secondaries. We really can't offer help with engine support systems fuel lines tanks etc since this is a truck site.
