I was wondering if maybe someone had some idea about what might be wrong with this truck. It is a 79 ford with the 400. It will start and run fine for about ten min. Then die and will not restart for atleast three of four hours. I changed out the ecm and the coil and still the same thing. Do you think the pick up coil would do that. They dont normally go out do they. Anyone have any other ideas.
First you have to determine if it is electrical/ignition or fuel that is being lost and killing the engine.
Let it die again then check for spark at the plugs....
No spark and it could very well be the pickup coil, since you have changed the other normal suspects already.
If you still have good spark.....check for fuel at the carb....look in the carb and pull the throttle linkage....no gas squirting in and it is a fuel problem......filter, or maybe a clogging pickup in the tank.
Just a guess,if it's not fuel related having replaced what you have you may want to check the pick up in the dist. Those three wires that enter the dist go to the pick up.My old 400 used to eat up ecm's and pick=ups in dist.Best of luck
It is electrical Im pretty sure. I still get fuel at the carb. I get a spark from the coil wire when you first start to crank and right when you let off the key. Is that normal, and i get no spark at the plug once it dies.
