Lastnight I found out the hard way that my 4x4 didn't work on my '03 S'Crew...and it was rather embarassing getting pulled out by a my buddie's Ranger (glad it wasn't a Chevy) I have the perfect envirmonet here to test it out in the Northeast with all the snow we've been getting. Its worked fine just two days ago when we got 8 inches of snow here. So I pulled across my driveway until my rear tires hit the snow and started to spin, stopped, flipped the know to 4x4 and nothing but real wheel tires spinning. I'm guessing this could be a number of things, esp. being all the electronics in new vehicles now days. Any guys out there ever have a similair problem. The truck isn't even a year old and with 20,000 miles. Glad its still under warranty! Although, being my baby is a little under the weather....FORD'S STILL RULE!
I got the electric shift, and yes the 4x4 light on the dash still does come on. I even climbed underneath to see if the small motor on the transfer case was clicking when its shifted in, and it is. Dealer's gonna look at it tomorrow!
Found out today from the dealer what the problem is. Turns out that a bushing was bad on the front forks, that come out of the differential. I didn't feel so bad because there was a '04 right beside mine with the same problem....yeah thats right I said '04 Problem is getting the part, might be 2-3 days before they get it in....guess it could always be worse!
I'm having the exact same problem with my 2003 F150 SuperCrew 4x4. The 4x4 light goes on, but its hit and miss with the 4 wheel drive actually working. Sometimes the 4x4 will lock in, but as I'm coming to a stop you'll feel and hear a "clunk" and the 4 wheel drive is gone. Had it into the Ford dealer a week ago and they stated that they are having a real problem with the pin breaking off in the "shift fork". The problem apparantly is becoming so common, that parts are getting harder to come by. Mine goes in this Thursday...finally.
I'm not totally sure, but I think its only the electronic shift, or at least all the ones I saw and heard of are that way. I hope that none of you guys have the same problem, because finding the replacement part is almost impossble. I've been waiting a week now, dealer showed my on the computer and there's 18 other '03 F150's waiting for the same part within a 100 mile radius of here, and I live in a fairly rural area. You would think it wouldn't be this difficult, but there's a long, confusing story behind not having the part available.
