my cousins 1987 2.9 ranger has no power. does anyone know why. he has replaced the egr valve and spark plugs and before he goes and buys anything he dont need, he wood like to here what other people think.
Here are some things to check:
1. Ignition timing
2. Fuel and carb. Check the fuel filter.
3. Compression. All cylinders shoud be no more than 25psi different. The compression should read over 100 at least on all cylinders.
4. Brakes grabbing or hanging up. Are they getting hot?
5. Auto xmsn fluid low or high.
6. Clutch slipping.
7. Bad coil or distributor (cap, rotor etc.)
Hook up a vacuum gauge & you will know in a couple seconds if the cat is clogged. Pulled any codes lately?? The vacuum gauge will also let you know if you need to check compression or not.
"key on engine on" code said "egr opening not detected" put new one in.
"key on engine off" code said "manifold absolute pressure out of self test range"
I'm no expert on this stuff, but since the MAP monitors how much air is entering the engine & based on that the injectors are held open longer or shorter times & ignition timing is also based on that. I would think the MAP might be your problem. BTW the EGR doesnt effect horsepower.
