I was looking around the engine compartment, and I noticed there are a lot of wires that go into the ignition module. What do you do with those when you put an MSD 6AL in? Do you take out the Duraspark II, or do you just hook up the MSD 6AL right next to it? I'm a little confused, because the MSD ignition came with a diagram, but it just tells you what wires on it do what. I could use a little guidance...
When I put my msd box in I just pulled all the Duraspark stuff back and wired it out of the way. Left the ignition module box connected and still on the truck. That way, if for some reason you want to go back to Duraspark, it's all still there. Also, I just mounted the ignition wire for the msd on a seperate toggle switch and followed msd's diagram. I looked and unwrapped wires for 2 hours for the fusible link wire in the dash for the key on the ignition switch and finnaly gave up. I still use the key switch to start the truck and turn everything except the ignition on. MSD has a excellent forum on their website, that will cover alot of problems you might encounter. Your questions will either be answered by an msd tech or somebody else that has already ran across the problem, and as always.....the search engine can be VERY HELPFUL!
Fusible link wire? Do you mean the resistor wire? If you do you were looking right at it. It looks just like a regular wire. I can't remember what color it is tho...
So what exactly happens to all of the excess wires going into the DuraSpark II? The MSD unit only has like 5 or so wires, and the DuraSpark has two clusters.
Just pull your wiring harness for the Duraspark coil and distirbutor back away from you engine, fold them up and tie them with a cable tie. You can lay them somewhere like behind the master cylinder or on the left side fender well next to the ignition module. You won't have to use any of the Duraspark wires to hook-up the MSD. Run a hot wire from your ignition solenoid with a 30 amp inline fuse before entering the firewall to a heavy toggle switch inside the cab, that will be your power wire for the MSD. Follow MSD's diagram after that. Whatever you do, don't go cutting the duraspark wiring harness with wire cutters just to get it out of the way. As long as you still have the wiring harness there you can be hooked back up to Duraspark in just a few minutes. I have even heard of some people carrying their stock Duraspark with them in case they get their distributor wet and need a quick fix to get home.
Just re-read your post Brent.......Are you using the stock duraspark distributor or MSD distributor??? Either way it should be no problem. If your using the duraspark dist. with the 6AL I would go by the diagram on top of page 18 in the manual with MSD box. You can use the white wire on a seperate toggle switch for a "theft deterant" switch or just leave it taped as the diagram suggest. I installed a Pro Billet dist. with my application. Another tip......go to NAPA and get a heavy toggle switch for the ignition, cheap low amp switches will "burn up" fast on a ignition hot wire. The red wire from MSD 6AL will go to your toggle switch (from battery) instead of from original coil in diagram. You should be able to hook it all up in an afternoon easily. Gathering all the extra wire, switches and monting the 6AL box will be the most time consuming. After that it is just crimping wires toghether.
