Need to replace the rear main seal in a 90 5.0 Mustang. Is it as simple as getting the flywheel off? Rear main cap can stay? Leave the crank alone? Yada, yada, ....
Yep, sounds easy and it is, but takes forever if you do it by yourself. Requires you to punch (not drill) two holes into the seal, then install machinist screws, then figure out a way to pull the screws to get the seal out. If you haven't done it before, then it might be a good time to get a haynes manual and go over what you need to do in your head, before you do it, besides you'll probably need the manual again, its handy to have. Have fun, good luck, later
I've seen 2 piece seals and I've heard you can drop the rear main cap and use the new upper piece to force the old one out so you don't have to disturb the crankshaft. Obviously the oil pan has to be removed first too. Never tried it tho.
By 1990 I'm exepecting a 1 piece seal tho and either way the trans has to be pulled back to get the flywheel off. I'll use 2 screws like JW suggests but first drill a piece of flat stock to go under them. A big effin' screwdriver under the flat stock will hopefully do the rest.
i changed the rear main in my 85 truck. a buddy told me to get 2 bolts the same dia. and thread pitch as my bell housing bolts but about 10" long it allowed me to slide the tranny back, change the seal, and slide the tranny forward without fighting to get it alligned. i don't know if you will have the room to do that but it sure made it easy. also, spend the $12 or so and get new flexplate bolts, i broke 2 of them off while i was reinstalling them, i have heard this is common and all the tranny shops told me to buy new.
