Mail order catalogs and buying off the internet has killed alot of good stores, I personaly blame TOWER HOBBIES for destroying the local hobby store business. When the local store have to order from places like Great Planes who has a seprate sideline Business like Tower Hobbies which sells at a lesser price to the genral public thru mailorder then it sells to the local hobby shops, i think that is wrong. I cant count the number of times i have called them and said hey you have this priced lower in your mailorder catalog then you are selling it to me for. Sometimes they would give it to me for the advertised price instead but usually it was sorry we cant help you. Kinda sad that when we were buying 12 airplane kits for the store, you could buy 12 kits from the catalog and have them shipped to your door for 200 bucks less. I think it is in their plans o put the local hobby shops out of business and have everyone buy from their mail order catalog.
Originally posted by grapegravy I thought we established quite awhile ago that anything at all to do with a store closing down Has to be Wal-Mart's fault. Or even on cutting back stores. I'm sorry to see Kay-Bee go, where I used to buy all my models and ho scale train accessories. They had a better selection than the local hobby shop. Which closed down about three years after Kay-Bee entered. Hmmm,,,, seeing a trend anyone?
K-B was a little high around here. They had some neat things. I think they're keeping the one in Raleigh open. But anyway, last time I was in a K-B, I ran across some HO trains that had minor problems, like the little axles were dislodged and broken couplers, (I always have extra couplers on hand), and I was able to get them with a 50% discount for being damaged.
The closest hobby shop to me is about 20 miles and they are actually opening more stores instead of closing. But they also carry more than just trains. They have HO, O, S, Z, N and G scale trains and then a bunch or gas and electric R/C cars and airplanes, and then cake making stuff and dollhouse building kits and scale model car kits and a bunch of stuff like that.
All the ones in the N.O metro area have nothing but junk. Nothing for anyone older than 4-5. No trains, no slot cars, no models, plenty of PS2 and XBOX stuff, though...
