PSD Newbie - Engine Warm-up???

Hey all! Well, I finally picked up my new 2002 F-250SD CC SB last night and can't stop drooling. This board was extremely benficial in helping me select the proper configuration for my truck. Now, my question: I could not find anything in the supplemental manual for the PSD engine that said anything about warming up the engine. I am aware of the "cooling off" period after highway driving or towing, but what is really necessary for warming up the motor, say in the morning. It was only ~60F degrees this morning, but being unsure what to do, I let it warm up for a minute or so, then took the extra minute of idiling through my sub, before I hit the main road. I was extremely gentle on it all the way to work (about 20 minutes), so hopefully this was suffice. I am sure there are a million different opinions on this, but is there a standard, say from Ford or Navistar that states a proper warm-up procedure/time? Thanks in advance!!

Congrats on your new truck!!!

Now for my .02 on the warm up issue.

I have never liked go to work as sone as I wake up. Nor does any motor like it. I always go out start up my truck and let her run a few min when I get in her in the morning. I then take it nice and easy till I get to the main road. Then run her like I would any other motor.

My dad always said if you leave them warm up a bit you won't get oil leaks as offten as well.

The manual doesn't mention anything about warmup because there is no warmup needed. Diesels don't warm up very well by idling.

Your engine would warm up faster if you drove right after starting. Drive it gently until the temperature is up to normal.

Scott;

Congrats on the new truck, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Also WELCOME to the site.

Now as to your question, I to am an oil burner, and I ALWAYS let mine warm up a little depending on the temps.

Example,

50-70= about 2 minutes
30-50= about 5 minutes
below 30 = about 10 minutes

AND when I first take off I take it easy for the first 2-3 miles.

Just my $.02

Jim

P.S. Remember to keep the shinny side UP.

I seem to recall that you are not supposed to let a PSD idle for more than 5 minutes without getting a "idle step-up" device (I can't remember the technical term) that increases rpm to 1000. This info was gleaned from another infamous website. Damage may occur to something like the fuel delivery system (?) (I wish my memory was better ). You might want to check into it @ www.ford-diesel.com

Congrats on the new baby
