OK, now I am seriously looking at the DUI, despite the cost. I assume the cap/ rotor comes with the kit? And what do you do when it comes time to replace the cap/rotor? Stock GM parts (shudder)?
Considering the cost of an OEM replacement distributor (not a bad move for a 30-year old dizzy) thrown in w/ the ignitor II and coil, this is looking to me like the way to go...
Thats the cool thing about it. When it comes time to replace the parts you just use their output component replacements. BUT, in a pinch you could just slap in any dime-a-dozen easy to find gm components and it will run just fine of that too. Did I mention in this thread that they also custom curve the dizzy specifically for your application? I don't usually pimp parts but I've been genuinely impressed with my DUI and interaction with the company. Plus, I went with the clear cap and it looks purty at night
Hehe... since this is basically a stock motor (and I plan to keep it that way, due to my "jack-of-all-trades" requirement) I think the basic design of their entry-level dizzy will work just fine.
And, I had custom Wavefront Lasik performed today. It's latest and greatest vision fix, done by one of the most respected Lasik Doctors. I'm not cheap when it comes to old truck parts, I certainly wasn't going to skimp on my Eyes. So far so good, I was under the laser at about 2:10pm today, and I've already seen an improvement. 94% with this procedure were at 20/20 or better by the next morning.
So I've had an expensive week, not to mention that Maragrita/Gentlemen's club incident on Tuesday night..but that's hush hush.
So, I have to back off the truck upgrades for a bit. Must pay some bills and kiss the Boss' butt :-)
Amazingly, I told her today after I got my eyes fixed (tried to surprise her at this Black tie gig on Saturday night, but I have to wear these eye shields at night. DIdn't see me hiding that very well). So I confessed to the Lasik surgery and the impending boat purchase in the same phone call, and there wasn't any screaming. I think I'll keep her.
Actually, I was seriously looking at boats like that. 27-32ft with twin motors. I love the way they look and all, but they simply aren't good for much but sucking down gas. Now, if you're a single Sugar daddy, they's be good for picking up woman of questionable character. But, that's about it. You can't ski behind one, at least not well. They hold fewer people than than a 22ft run-about. And they are heck on your tow vehicle.
Well Guys....I was going to go with the MSD Billet Dist.and a 6 series.. Module..... But I like that DUI unit..Its simple..for a clean install...its all in one unit... $375 for 50,000 volts? HMMM?? and vacuum advance for the street!! Neat!!! Russ... Oh and plus a set of 9mm plug wires!!
Just a note, guys, in a way you are comparing apples and oranges. The DUI is an excellent piece, but it does not have the multi-spark function of the MSD boxes(6A, 6AL, etc.), so comparing prices you should not include the box, just the dizzy and coil. The MSD box can be added to almost any ignition to improve performance.
Finally, a thoughtful responce !Thanks Putt.
Swann, the dizzy you need is the Ford duraspark or a points unit with a pertronics installed. A distributor, in and of itself, does nothing to increase performance. It is all about how much ampereage gets pumped across the plugs and what is the duration of that spark. The Davis unit is a higher performance coil on top of the normal chevy design. The problem with this is that the trigger mechanism is inside of the dizzy, where it can get overly hot, and fail. Ford tried the same thing in the mid to late 80s, calling it TFI ignition. It didn't work very well, had a high failure rate and is not what you want. If you want better ignition, and you don't want to waste money doing it, the duraspark is far and away the best choice. Magnetic pickup triggering is what works best, and thats what the inside of a durasprk has. The duraspark also has a vacuum can, and you need one for decent fuel mileage. The unilite on Ebay didn't have a vacuum can. If you put a pertronics inside your points dizzy, it will have the same vacuum can you had before. A very nice feature of the duraspark is that you can get a rebuilt unit (from a stock 75 or 76 390 or 360 ) from a parts house for less than 50$. Then to get multistike or longer duration sparks, add a MSD or Jacobs or Crane or whoever you like's ignition computer, and matching coil. That's what gives those big healthy sparks. Anywho bought a Davis Unified or Mallory or MSD dizzy is the victim of a SCAM. Now, I'm not saying those dizzys won't work or you can't make power with them, you can. But your paying a bunch more money than you had too to get the same performance. And if you have a dizzy without a vacuum can....shame on you! You're throwing away a bunch, yes, a bunch, of you fuel mileage. If you drive on the street, ever, you need the vacuum advance. There is no other way for the dizzy to know when you're pulling a heavy load and when you're not. Just say NO to aftermarket distributors. DF
Thank you DF!! I was all set to upgrade to a Petronix but this thread had me convinced to go with a DUI. Now I will use the extra cash on some nedded parts. I think the Petronix will suit my needs. I like the idea that if it ever failed on road I could still slap a set of points in and be on my way.

Did not mean to start , but it seemed that some weren't thinking of the whole package! Multi-spark is only available in a separate box like DF and I said. The adjustments for vac and mech advance are tuneable on any dizzy if you're willing to do it. Advance springs-find any old Ford dizzy and take them! Adjustable vac can- any quality aftermarket can is adjustable! The MSD dizzy is a great piece, but it alone won't help perf. without the supporting cast! The DUI is great and it comes set up for your engine-that is the big diff I see. I'm not willing to spend the money to have someone else do what I can(altho it might take longer! ).
I like the HEI and DUI because parts are available EVERYWHERE. I've accidently fried a pertronix doing a roadside coil change and had to go back to points and then shell out another $60 for a new one. I've had a ton of problems with the duraspark crap and would never use it again. The MSD and box might perform the best, but it is also the most complicated and cluttered. I wouldn't want to think how expensive it could get if I hooked the wires up wrong on the MSD box in the dark on the side of the road. Might as well carry a whole extra distributor with me. With the HEI (DUI) Even if I do fry it (which is hard with one wire) I can find HEI parts virtually anywhere. I own several fords, and also an old chevy 4x4. The HEI is the the distributor you'll find on 99% of chevy motors and for good reason.
