Question DUI Distributor?

Can somebody give me more info on the "DUI distributor"?

I am planning to install a Pertronix Ignitor II and coil in my 390 soon, but I read in another thread about the possibility of this distributor performing much better. Any other thoughts on this? Other suggestions are appreciated as well. I am willing to spend a little bit more than what the Pertronix costs, but not a lot. I have looked at some of the other distributors and ignition systems, but am unsure what to buy.

My rig is a "jack of all trades"... meaning daily/occasional driver, off-road, towing, and stoplight-to-stoplight Chebby eater. The engine is completely stock with points right now, w/ a 4-bbl and electronic ignition the only planned upgrades for now.

Thanks in advance!

If you don't want to spend a lot stay away from the DUI..The lowest cost way to get a good upgraded ign that will do what you need is to install a Pertronix or a Unilite conversion..There are others but these 2 seem to be the most used..I have had the Unilite for many years with no problems..Just wish it used the stock rotor..To buy the whole new dizzy the believe the prices start around 230 bucks and climb quickly..

This wasn't part of your ? but in your upgrades I don't see headers listed..They would be a big help..JMO..

yeah I plan to do the headers sometime down the road... I think my problem will be finding a set that will fit my application though. Obviously, the 390 is a transplant into my '79 4X4 and I've heard it is difficult to find headers that will fit. I think I remember Ratsmoker mentioning fenderwell exit headers, so I think that's where I will start looking.

Thanks for the input, I think right now I'll stick w/ my Pertronix plan.

on the performance distibutors web site the dui is $375 for an fe motor, a full unilite distributor with vac advance is $229, a unilite cinversion is about $95 i ran a unilite for quite a while and it worked great i left the key on one night and burned it up.

Reagrding the DUI dizzies. I realize they are a bit pricey. But they cost no more than an MSD Billet dizzy, 6AL and upgraded coil. To me the big benefit, much lesss stuff under the hood.

79, it is Scouder that was talking about fenderwell exits..But remember he has a 250 and is welding them himself..Which would be the way to go I think..

Gtex, I don't remember, did you go with the DUI after the problems with the MSD?..

No, I'm stull running the MSD setup. It's working well, but there sure is a lot of wire under the hood. I like the simple look of the DUI. It also uses vacuum advance, which might help with my gas mileage.

With my motor making power below 5500RPM with healthy vacuum, the MSD may be overkill for me.

Hey there,
I'm running the DUI in my 390. Ran the pertronix and aftermarket coil in my old motor and for the first week in my new motor. When I switched it was like nite and day. I personally like the simplicity of them. Friend has had one in his 351w powered 73 bronco for 3 years with zero problems. I bought the whole darn thing, but realizing now that the DUI is just chev HEI parts I should have tried to buy just the special housing and shaft maybe saved some money. And the DUI will fit a 14" air cleaner if you have a 1" carb spacer. They say in the instructions not to run them with HV oil pumps, but I think that's crap. I just put lubriplate on the gear and it's broke in perfect so far. I would highly recommend it, but do agree the price is steep.

I've run just about all of them over the years, and now after running my DUI for the last two years I'll never use anything else. They are a little more expensive, but its worth it to me to have a high performance, simple, and bullet proof ignition.

Like I said above, I don't think it's all that expensive.

Consider:

MSD Billet Dizzy= $240
MSD 6AL= $200
MSD Blaster Coil= $34

total= $574

Sounds like a deal vs. the setup I have now. Hell, I could probably get the needed $375 for my stuff used on Ebay...Hmmmmmm???

Pro, can you provide that link again. I can't find the old thread.
