I just bought this truck 6 months ago, It is a 2003 F-150 XLT 4.6 Reg. Cab Stepside, 3.55 LS 4X4 with the STX Package Silver. 7800 KMS.
Last night cleaned snow out of drive-way, parked truck up the road, in about 4 inches of snow on the right side up-hill , road on left side snow covered, went to pull away just spin. Put it in 4wd H same thing spin (Electronic Shift On the Fly). put it in 4wd Lo same thing spin. Finally drove out. left it in 4wd H gave it smee gas and rear end kept fishtailing. So not in 4WD as what the dash is showing. Dealer is going to look at it and see what the promblem is. Anyone have the same problem. It will finally go in to 4X4 but takes WAY to long. About 2-3 Mins. of driving. Its the first ford I've owned well first vehicle besides a 1989 GMC 1500 305 2WD tha tdad owned since new. 20 Years old. And already put a new Injector in it, put a new clutch pack in rear end, and now this, what else.
Found out from the dealer the forks in the front axle were not working to engage the 4wd. problem is the part is back ordered. Don't know when the part will be in. It is on EMERGENCEY ORDER. seems allot of 2003 F-150 4X4 have this problem.
Yep, and a lot of GM trucks had the same trouble. My Z71 left me stuck in a snowstorm once for the exact same reason. With both companies having the same trouble, you'd think they would get a little smarter and change the design. Oh well, I don't have to worry about that with this truck
I pretty much had the exact same problem with my '03 S'Crew two nights ago, front wheels just will not engage. I had to get pulled out by my buddie's Ranger....how embarassing! My neighbor who is a mechanic at the local Ford Garage and he said it looked like transfer case, but that was just a educated guess. I have a appt. to let the dealer look at it, and see what's wrong, I'm lucky though because its still under warratny. Not even a year old with 20,000 miles, and one ticked off owner....we'll see what they have to say. Might be the same problem you guys had.
Hey MasterT,
I'm sitting in the exact shoes you are here, with regards to your truck problem. My '03 is out too! I've been waiting a week now for parts, what about you? Dealer showed me today that there's 18 other '03's in my area waiting for the same part, sounds like something Ford should be recalling to me! It's FRUSTRATING!
Hey Brian429
I've been waiting a week and still no truck. Called Dealer Still no parts. Maybe Tomorrow they said. I hope they come soon. What Province or State Are You in. I'm in Ontario.
Called the dealer today, They said we might get your part tomorrow, the warehouse now has stock. the warehouse told my dealer that there are 100 03 4X4 that need the same part as I. All on Emergency Order. If I don't get my truck back by Saturday which is in three day, It will be their two weeks.
Well I just got my truck back Today. It's good to have it back, Sick of driving a 2004 Ford Tauraus, then a 1999 Ford Windstar, then and finally a 2000 F-150 4X4. all in two weeks. when I asked for a truck to begin with. Well Good Luck Brian429 and all the rest of you.
You can't beat lock-outs and a shifter on the floor for reliability, all that auto stuff is nice I admit, until you get in a jam and it won't kick in, in my friends 95 Dodge the other night we couldn't back up a hill on ice, so he stuck it in 4 and it still wouldn't kick in, we had to drive about 40 ft. down the hill till it would start working. Same thing happened in me friends chevy with auto hubs, got stuck and couldn't move and the 4wd wouldn't kick in so we had to get my truck and pull it about 20ft and then it kicked in. Anyway I'm with you guys, after about 20yrs of auto hubs you think they could get the bugs out already.
