Lightbulb Excursion 2003 Big Thump

We have a 2003 Excursion and we have been hearing a big thump noise. This happens when you start the vehicle and you still have it in park, all of a sudden you hear a big thud. Took it to Ford and they said they couldn't find it, and couldn't hear it either. But its still happening. You also hear it sometimes when your are backing up or turning. Has this happened to anyone else? Or does anyone know what it might be?

Since the Excursion is so big... it may be the neighbor's dog or cat your running over!!!!

Now if they could put the rear sensing system on the front (for me) when parking!!!

Some have complained of a noise when shifting from reverse to drive and stepping on accelerator?

There is a TSB for a noise when shifting from Park to "R" or "D" can't remember. Read through the form for 6.0L PSD motors (below excursions). There are more posts and more comments written. Do a search and see if that helps.

In the meantime yell "CLEAR" when starting and backing up!!!!

Good luck,

Hmmmm...I replied to this.... Wonder what happened...

Anyway, it could be your AC compressor kicking on. Try starting it without any of the HVAC controls on. My compressor sounded like a big hammer hit the frame when it would first engage. If it is indeed the case, it is completely normal. It is an "purging" of sort that the compressor does every now and then. I think it is referred to as CASS.

Also, some will "thump" when the blend door on the HVAC system closes.

Mine does the same thing, but not with enough regularity to take it to the dealer. (If I can't tell them when it happens, how can I get them to fix it? )

It does seem to me to have something to do with the HVAC system. It sounds like it is inside the cab and the noise is VERY loud. It makes me jump when it happens. When the truck was brand new it was a slower groaning sound, now it seems to be just a loud thump. (maybe it is the cooler weather that changed it?)

Let me know if you find out anything. It is very annoying.

I experience sometimes a "clonk" right after I start the truck and pull out of the driveway. Only does it one time and that mainly after the truck was parked over night in the driveway.

It does not sound to me that it has something to do with the A/C. Tried that already - windows open, A/C off, but still the same.
It almost sounds like after sitting for a while that the frame is making noises or something. It appears to come from the front right, somewhere on the passenger side, that's for sure.

Have not mentioned it yet to the shop, but I will when I'm having my next oil change there... I let you know if I find out something!

I have this one too. Different sound. Just as annoying.

Really don't know what it could cause... I was under the vehicle several times, but could not determine where that sound is coming from?

Maybe we get an answer soon....

Sometimes the CSS function (that purging of the AC compressor as I descrubed above) doesn't need the AC on to do it.

For those with the CD manual, this noise can be looked up. It is the only thing that I found that would explain the noise when it did it on mine.

I thought I read about a month ago where some one had found a bolt on the front sway bar loose. I can not remember exactly what they called it, but from what I could gather it was where the sway bar connects the frame on the passengers side. It had oblonged the hole in the frame. Their fix was to weld the nut to the frame. Mine does it two when I first back out of the drive way.

Question Excursion 2003 Big Thump

I have the same noise. It only happens if I start the truck and the place the vehicle in gear. I'm sure it is not coming from the frame or driveline. I pretty sure it has something to do with the HVAC system. It seems that maybe it is a door closing or opening.

It would be nice to know for sure one way or another.

I notice this when I go from park to reverse to drive. It sounds like it's coming from the rear of the vehicle. I've got a '03 6L PSD 4wd with only 2000 miles on it. I had to do a 4 point turn out of a parking spot tonight and it did it twice. It seems to happen when the driveline is loaded-unloaded-loaded again, but only when switching the direction of the load. In other words, it does not do it if I go Drive-Neutral-Drive but will do it if I go Drive-Reverse-Drive.

Weird and slightly unsettling.....

The noise that you are hearing is the door that directs the moving air from the blower motor to the defroster vent or the floor, I believe that door is on a vacuum actuator when there is a shock to the actuator it slams shut. I have an 02 it does the same thing occasionally. There really isn't anything you can do to stop it that I have found. If you are wondering how I came up with this answer it is from the years spent working at Ford dealerships, owning nothing but Ford since I could drive.

Gregaber,

Have an 04 X with 1500 miles. Mine does same thing. This is a thump from the rear of the vehicle. Thought it might be shifting of fuel in the tank, but happens when full also. Seems to be triggered by shifting from reverse > drive. Nothing to do with AC/vent system.
