Well I was thinking about putting a new engine in my truck. Possibly getting a 302 short block and putting some nice parts on it. Or a long block..but I didn't really find the combo I wanted.
My engine has 98k mi on it. I havn't done a compression test or anything, but it seems like it's in good shape. I was thinking about putting a few mods into the engine, but am unsure because of the mileage. I was thinking maybe some new heads, cam, possibly an intake, and headers. Should I think about doing this, or should I go a different route. The way I look at it is I could put these parts on and use the engine for a few more years and then buy a short block and swap the new parts onto the short block and assemble that. Any feedback? I'm still new to this but I'm trying to learn.
does your motor use oil? What is the compression? If thecomp. is good and it doesn't use oil go ahead, otherwise while you have it apart new bearings and rings, and possibly a rebore would be the smart move.
I agree with you and the above comment, if the compression is good then why not throw the speed parts on, then again with the additional power your probably gonna wanna push it a bit harder, and you can be almost certain your bearings will wear quicker and your oil psi drop. So why not go that extra step and have the shortblock redone at the same time, then you won't have to mess with the motor any time soon, hopefully, and you might pick up another 10-15 hp in the process. Good luck with what you decide, I have been doing some looking and the comp cams seems to be the best bet so far, so that is something to think about as well. Have fun, later
It uses about a qt of oil every 3k..but I don't drive it much ..I mean I drive about 8k-9k mi a year...so I don't change it that much and havn't really got an accurate assesment of oil usage. So you guys basically think its not really a good idea to do that?
Your call. I think if you have gone that far it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to freshen up the shortblock. If you don't drive it much, then why not throw the parts on and see what happens. I would do a compression test to be sure the cylinders are at least consistent, if they check out then go for it. Good luck, let us know what you decide and how it goes, later
Have you seen the central coast mustang ad in muscle mustang&fast fords. They have a few engines reasonably priced. 302 longblock, 320hp gt-40p heads b or e -303 cam, its a roller motor obviously, $1895. They have the p headers for your truck $219. They have a "budget" motor 302 300hp gt-40p heads $1695. Phone 661-823-2400 give them a call and see if they have what you need. Again good luck
Well I think I should do a compression test before I really get into it. I won't be starting the physical part of the project until spring/early summer. If I went with a new engine, I'd have to figure out exactly what I want for parts and a good gustimate of how much it will cost. If my engine is in good enough condition, I think it wouldn't be a bad idea as long as know that putting new parts on an old engine won't be the wrong thing to do. It kinda hurts to think that if I put a new engine in my truck, I'd be getting rid of an engine that only has 100k mi on it, i'm sure it still has another 50k+ left.
