i have a 89 f150 with a 300-6 and a auto and its 2wd....i want to convert it to 4wd....i have a parts frame from a 84 f150 4x4 with the motor(300-6)/tranny(4speed)/ect on it.... now will the motor from the 84 be the same as the 89's motor??? will the tranny from the 84 (a 5speed) fit yhe motor from the 89 (which hhas a 3 speed auto on it now) will my fuel injection work with the carbed motor????? and will the 4x4 system on the 84 fit on my 89?????
im not an expert at this, but i do know the motors are different, you go from carbed to efi, which is computer controlled, and the changeover would be a hassle, and im sure the frame is different as well, well this is the best knowlegde i have, and i personally would just buy a 4x4. well good luck in whatever you do.
Search and you will find posts on this. But briefly, I would find a 4wd auto overdrive AOD tranny and swap it on to 89 engine and 84 transfer case.
The front end is a bolt in swap, aand the driveshafts from the 84 will work as long as both trucks are same length.
You may find it cheaper to have the auto tranny you now have converted, but I doubt it. Also if your current 89 is overdrive, get the same type so the linkages and kickdowns will work.
All in all , it is aan easy swap and well worth the effort.
I did an 85to 88 swap and have been driving it for 3 years+ with no problems.
