I replaced the coolant just the other day. After doing that
I now have a squeak. It is not the noise you hear if belts
are slipping or get wet. I have driven it several times to see
if continued and it hasn't stopped.
Could a simple thing as replacing coolant have caused a
problem with the water pump?
If it is the water pump does anybody know of a web site that
has the steps for replacing it?
Hobbyman,
Sounds like it could be the waterpump bearing. Is there any coolant leaking from the seep hole on the pump. If so, you need a new pump. If not try adding some barsleak or the like to the coolant to lube the bearing.
As for the replacement your best bet is to get you a Haynes or Chiltons Manual. I prefer the Haynes.
It's amazing the metalic/bad bearing sounds that a bad belt can make. Try spraying a little water on the belt & see if the noise goes away. A couple years ago I thought I was hearing a bad water pump bearing on my 87 2.9. Sprayed a little water on the belts and the noise went away. Changed the belts & no more noise.
Bars Leak should be the last resort. Especially if you didn't have a leak. It could be a coincidence, but maybe the water pump bearing, alternator bearing, power steering pump, or belt is making the noise. Try the water trick to see if it goes away. Does it do it at idle. If so, pop the hood and listen for the noise. Just changing the fluid should not cause a problem.
