yea. replace the guts from junkyard truck. not hard to replace. Star bitset, ratchet wrench and a socket set take care of all of it.
oh ya. uhm..... flat head screwdriver too.
It depends on your junkyard... some of them seem to think a handle is worth as much as the entire tailgate, in which case, its easier to remove the entire tailgate especially in this weather.
One yard wanted $100 for a pair of 460 EFI valve covers. The yard next door sold the entire engine for $350 with accessories. The guy down the street wanted $800 for the same engine, though I have to admit the $800 looked brand spanking new, it was very clean. But, $350 plus a few cans of engine degreaser and a small wire brush, I'll save the $450 thank you.
Look around... deals are everywhere. I've noticed a trend lately of the eight or so yards that I go to they try to dink everyone for at least $35 bucks. If I take a small snip of EFI harness it seems to cost as much as a wheelbarrow full.
Is that just NJ yards being annoying? Or are others experiencing this?
frederic> I have noticed that as well. Now when i enter the wreakers I tell them what i need and ask how much before i go and freeze to get the part that i could have bought brand new. The last item was a compleate rear end. I went out got a rear end minus the brakes, springs, drums. go to pay for it $80.00 then they start adding to the price stablizerbar=$10.00, 2back plates=$8.00 Brake line=$6.00 U-boltsx2= $5.00 and $10.00 for 2 crap shocks that were rusted on. point is I thought all the stuff was included in the complete rear end price. They are gettin bad.
These junkyards down here in Ga. love their merchandise alot, I mean they jack the price up so high so they can keep it I guess??
One wanted $175 for just the tailgate and the other wanted around $250 and I can get one from the manufacturer here for about $275. I'll check on the guts and handle before I make my choice.
holla!!
I hear you both. For a while I thought maybe it was me.
This is why when a particular junkyard in PA about 2 hours away has its annual "dollar day" sale - all parts a dollar, I tend to go nuts.
See, NJ as a state does not allow u-pull-its any longer, its all over the counter yards. The parts cost more this way, as there is labor figured in, and it eliminates the "Oh, I need that too" add-on sale. The one yard I do frequent does allow u-pull-it types, and they are only slightly less costly than the over the counter places. But, it is an advantage because when I was plucking parts to build an GM-based EFI system for my 460 I just acquired, I was able to get "a little of this" and "a little of that". I plan by walking around filling up my wheelbarrow <G>
I was reading through th JC Whitney catalog because I just bought my first truck, and saw tailgate handles for around $20 bucks. This might be the way to go.
Actually, I was just at NAPA and saw that they have quite a few parts for tailgates on a rack. Since your out there looking, it wouldn't hurt to stop by and see what they have. I ended up replacing the plastic sleeves on the tailgate posts. shuts a lot easier now.
