DWilder,

Since you've eliminated U-joints, it could be an out-of-round tire or bent wheel that you don't really notice until you pick up speed. Try rotating your tires one at a time with the spare to see if you notice any difference.

Next, it could be bad ball joints (upper or lower). Do you feel the vibration through the steering wheel? It could also be bad tie rod(s) (outer or inner) in the steering.

Just a thought.

DWilder,

Sorry I haven't replied sooner. Been busy with plumbing problems at home.

I don't know whether a broken motor mount would cause the whole van to vibrate as indicated, but it could be something in the rear end. Since you have no shake in the steering wheel, this all but eliminates a front end problem. I'd recommend rechecking those U-joints. Also, on some models the U-joint attaches to the rear end with "U" clamps. Check the attaching nuts for proper torque.

Have you noticed any problems with shifting? Could this shake be related to either the clutch or transmission? I assume that you have an automatic transmission. Just a thought.

Hey Brother!

Welcome to the forums! This is Doug, your brother-in-law.

Here is my thought on this subject:

Check the drive line for the counter weight. From what I felt when driving in it, the shaking got worse when the speed got faster. My BII has a large lead weight on it to set the balance point.

Sound good to everyone else?

See ya later!

Did you take the driveshaft down to check joints, not all problems can be seen. Check it out and let us know. Good luck.

On my old 89 Aerostar the transmission crossmember bushings were shot where it attaches to the frame. This caused it to vibrate pretty bad. Just a thought.

DWilder,

I agree with both dnachristen and Matt. When checking the U-joints, also check on the drive shaft counter-balance (although I've never head of one coming off, it takes nothing to check that it's there.)

The transmission cross member bushings could also cause this type of problem.

I have the same problem and have been trying to sort it out for about a month now. I put on new tires, had a rim replaced that had a hop to it,balanced all the wheels, installed new tie rod ends (inner and outer),checked the wheel alignment,re did all the brakes and replaced all the shocks and still have a bad vibration at about 100km that gets worse as I speed up..today I had the u-joints checked and the mechanic says the rear transmission bushing or the spline itself is worn, and he showed me that the spline can be moved up and down about 1/8 " or more and that when I go fast the front of the driveshaft would wobble around!!Needless to say I wish I had discovered this before doing all the rest of thework first, it would have saved alot of time and $...87 3L shorty rwd

another thought if motor vibrates, and all else fails, sludge may be in motor causing a stuck lifter, that wuold cause alot of vibration, you would never know because it wont knock, to un stick it, with the vehicle at operating temperature, empty 3/4 of a can of carb cleaner into the throttlebody reving up the motor just enough to keep it running, after you reach 3\4 of the can spray the rest of it in the throttle body causing it to stall, after the can is empty leave the van alone for 10 to 20 minutes, start it, you may have to pump it to let air into the combustion chamber to get it going, take for a drive accelerate fast, slow, fast ,slow and that will blow the crap out of the exhaust, I had this problem or similar before, it may not make any sense but I was suprised by the outcome.
