carb problems

I own a 1977 f-100 with a 351m and has a 4 barrel edlebrock carb, 600 cfm i believe. Now i was wondering what the right adjustment for the carb would be, and which screws are what. The problem is when i start driving the truck for like about 5 miles or so it starts to cut out and boggs slowly down, like it starving for gas or something, i have replaced the fuel pump, sending unit, and put an edlebrock in filter, plus the lines are clear? do i need to have it rebuilt??would you help me out!

Hi,

Is this something that just started?

After the truck cools off is it OK then?

It sounds like it could be a heat problem percolating your fuel.

We need alittle more history on your problem. Is the carb newly installed?

Good luck,

It sounds like the carb is icing up. Does it smell like it is running rich? any black smoke?
Trucks are bad about this in the winter when the stock air cleaner isn't used. They need the warm air from the exhaust manifold to the snorkle to keep the incoming air warm enough to keep the air bleeds in the carb from icing up and making the carb flood.

A new one will do the same until you install the stock air cleaner until warmer weather hits.

Do you know if you have the heat stove or choke tube (they funnel warm air up to the carb)?

The heat stove would be a big metal tube about the size around of your arm going from the underside of your air cleaner down to the block, where it bolts on. Usually passenger side. The choke tube is a think tube going from the back of the carb down to the manifold, where it screws in. Should have a thick fabric sheath over it to protect anything around it from getting to hot. These help warm air going into the carb.

I see Tye. Dirt will make a carb act up pretty bad. I would try rebuilding it first. There are only a few pieces to change ( accel pump, needle and seats and top gasket). It would be alot cheaper.
Just a suggestion,
Jimmy
