Anyone have problems with the lumbar support in their 40/20/40 seat? Mine made a loud POP today and that was it. Now the **** just turns freely. How does the plastic seat back come off?
Man, you have been having a bad day. First the lumber and now the lumbar
Sorry haven't had a problem with my lumbar other than having the truck 6 months without using it. Used to be when I rode in the truck my butt bone would start hurting after 2 hours, I then adjusted the lumbar support and I've been fine since.
But to your problem, truck is still under warranty, do you have time to have the dealer fix it?? I know it's a pain to take it in, but maybe have them fix anything else that is wrong at the same time.
mines broken too, I read a thread a while ago, somebody knew all about it. I think you might have to pull the whole seat apart. I cleaned the garage this weekend maybe next weekend i'll try to fix mine , i'll let you know what I find.
02 with 60K on mine. My solution to the seat problem was to buy a thing called a sacroease. Look for it on ebay or google or at a relax the back store. I can't drive my truck without it. My 02 supercab seats suck in the comfort/support department. The nice thing about the sacroease is it gives plenty of lumbar support and it is not permanent or semipermanent as you can just remove it like a seat cushion.
Mine didn't go bad. Those poorly engineered handles did though. I slide off the seat if i'm in a hurry. I caught the handle and broke it. I was riding around with someone and they slide off and broke the other handle. Oh well, i don't like lumbar support so it doesn't matter to me.
My lumbar support broke about a year after I bought the truck. I took the **** apart and everthing was OK. Then I pulled the seat back off. The seat back is held on by plastic push pins and just pops off. I had to maneuver it a little to get it off. The lumbar support is basically a flexible metal plate with the cable attached top and bottom. When you turn the ****, the cable pulls the top and bottom of the flex plate toward on another causing the plate to bend.
The cable attaches to the bottom of this plate with a flimsy metal tab. The tab on mine broke so that the cable was no longer attached to the bottom of the plate. If this is your problem, I have a fairly easy fix that is far more durable than Ford's flex plate design.
Convieniently there is a small hole in the base of the flexible plate. I simpy bought a small eyebolt at Lowes and used it to attach the cable to the base of the flex plate. The eye bolt I used has a 1/2 in hole and 3/4 in thread I think it is a 10-32 thread pitch. If I remember correctly I removed the cable from the top of the flex plate threaded it through the ey of the eyebolt and reattached it. The fix cost me about 25 cents for the eyebolt and a couple of nylon nuts one top and bottom. Took about 10 minutes.
If this is your problem, I could pull the seat back off of mine again and tell you exactly how I fixed it.
Thanks Scott! I am not nearly as reluctant to start pulling on the seat back now that I know what to expect. If I get some time (warm time) this weekend, I'll tear into it.
