2004 (Heritage) F150 xl 4x2 4/6L Automatic Transmission

Hello all. I am new to the site. But I have found information here very helpful. I have a 04 Heritage model F150 4x2 4.6L with automatic transmission problems. I believe the transmission needs to be replaced. My issue is no reverse and no overdrive.

My questions are: What year F150 other than the 04 heritage can I use as a replacement? Can I use a 5.4L? Can I use a 4.2L? Will a 1999 thru 2003 work? Can I use one from an Expedition within those years (4.6L or 5.4L Auto 4x2)?

The problem is that through the years design changes were made in plug ups and speed sensing.
You have to look over these items closely to compare with other sources otherwise the trans internally is the same.
If you value the truck for the longer term I would have it repaired.
Be sure there are no codes set that indicate an electrical issue rather than mechanical. If the electrics don't work the mechanicals don't work.
Good luck.

There are no electrical issues. No codes. I have checked for all of that. My research has lead me to conclude that the reverse drum is bad in the transmission. I was told that the o/d grear is located in the reverse drum.

I was also told that the 04 heritage was rebadged from the leftover 03 F150 Heritage addition. The manufactured date is April '04 in Canada. The local ford dealer is telling me that only the transmission that matches up with my vin will work and that transmission is: A.T., Heritage, 8-280 (4.6L), (4R70W), 4x2, ID 4L3P-CA.

I am trying to find out if a a.t. 4x2 4.6L 4r70w from a '01 thru '03 f150 will work?

Thanks for your help.

4.2 V6 has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as a small block (5.0, 351, 302, 5.8, etc...)
4.6 & 5.4 have a unique bellhousing after 1992 or 1993 I think.

No guarantee on this, but I'm pretty sure that's the case.
