I have a 1997 F250 Heavy Duty with a 460 backed by a 4Eod trans. The truck has 79,000 miles and is in excellent condition. I tow a very light trailer only on occasion. Recently, the trans started droping out of OD, then slipping. Plus, the "Off" light on the shift lever would blink. I took the truck to the Ford dealer, they checked it out and founf no codes. The service guy said the trans only last about 80K miles. I find this hard to belive. Any body have any similar experiance?

If the OD light blinks, there is a code stored. Try having someone else check for codes.

I got about 6 yrs and 90k out of the E4OD in my 93 F350 7.3 idi CC 4x4 3.55LS. I towed a 6,500 lb boat 150 miles every other weekend and commuted 200 miles per week. I had the dealer install a Ford rebuilt and it included several upgrades (fixes) that they made post-1997. I sold the truck last year, but I heard that it now has 148k on with no new problems...
