Ok, so I bought a 99 xlt 4x4 with the 4.0. It runs great but it does have the marbly sound at idle. Other than being a little noisy, does this present any serious problems? What causes it, something in the valve train I would guess.
Welcome to the club. It sucks, but everyone says it won't hurt anything. It is embarassing though when you pull into a parking lot and everyone turns their head with a raised eyebrow
It doesn't do it all of the time, but MAN is it loud sometimes.
At idle, when warm, my engine makes a kind of gurgling noise sorta like marbles being rolled around. I had seen it mentioned here a few times, so I had to ask.
My dad's 2000 4.0L made the same noise. He stopped buying cheap-o 87 octane and started buying it at BP.It doesn't make any noises now.Just a smooth running engine.I just thought that I'd let you guys know that it helped his.It might be worth a try.

The noise you are describing is pinging, something different from marbling. Pinging happens with 87 octane fuel, when the engine is under load. Marbling happens at idle, when the engine is not under load, and fuel octane has no effect....
Yes the marbling seems to happen under very low load, like when coasting or lightly accelerating down a hill (as well as at idle). When I apply power it goes away.
I just changed the oil for the first time and I did not see any mortar chunks in the waste oil (ha). But I have a 5 speed so I don't think the torque convertor has anything to do with it.
