I have had my 2001 AWD 5.0L explorer since it was new in 2000. It only has 43,000 miles but has never let me down in the slightest. The only trouble has been a bad DPFE sensor ($85.00), firestone tire recall (free), rear wiper stopped working and stopped touching the rear window (easy to fix), driver seat bolt recall (not done yet), and now this squeel when it is really cold out for the first two miles driven. We had a SOHC V6 before this and Ford saw more of the truck then we did.
The Check Engine Light came on and wouldn't go away after fuel tank refills and a full engine cycle. There was a OBD-II code P0402 which represented an insufficient EGR flow. I have a friend at a local Ford Dealer who said, "Yep, It's your DPFE sensor". I created a thread "Check Engine Light Problem & Solution" back in October on this site which details the replacement of this part in a step by step fashion.
I have a '98 EB AWD V8 with just over 90,000 miles. I haven't had any real problems (aside from routine maintainance) except that the front swaybay bushings are going to s**t, but that's getting taken care of in the next couple of days. The next is front end vibration. Have had the tires checked, rechecked, and checked again, Michelins too. the last one is that its starting to burn oil, significant amounts. When I change it I'm only getting about 3-31/2 quarts back out and it smells burnt. It only started doing this at about 65,000, but has gotten more noticable recently. The last time I had it checked out they said they couldn't find and signs of oil leakage anywhere. I wonder if the rings might be going bad. I really don't need to pay for a rebuild.
Other than these relatively minor quips it has been an awesome truck!! Totally reliable. Starts every time (except when the crappy original battery died when it was only 1-1/2 years old).
Thanks for all the replies! What kind of gas mileage can I expect from one of these? I've looked at a couple of Mountaineers and they are nice--I'll probably end up with a 99 or 2000.
16-18 mpg. Have seen 22 on highway trips. Wife has a 99 Mountaineer loaded with all of the toys.
I felt greedy after buying my Super Duty and I just couldn't see her driving that caravan anymore so I bought her the high dog on the lot.
Turns out to be a great purchase. 55k one set of front brakes and a free set of michelin's.
That AWD loves those washboard mountain passes.
I wish I could get climate control and a moon roof on my truck.
On-edit
I forgot the 1-2 accumulator lower spring on the 4r70w shattered. 700$ estimate at the trans shop. I did it for 32.00(fords high cost of parts) + two flushes of that expensive tranny fluid. Gotta feel good about that one. I posted it in the trans section last summer.
Peace

I bought my 00 Mountaineer last august with 30,600 miles on it.Now Im pushing 40,000 and love it.The AWD suits my needs perfectly, traded a 4wd ranger that never saw low range.Just made a 400 mile round trip and for mileage saw 17 when keeping cruise under 80.When I set it 85-90 it dropped to 14-.5-15.Love the power of the V8 and have surprised many people around town and on the interstate, the best was a Supra that I just about hung with to have him get behind me and see what I drove then turn around.
