Im thinking about selling my wife's ranger and buying her an explorer. im looking at the '06-'10 models and was wondering if there were any real problems with these trucks and what kind of real world mileage they get. Also is the V8 worth paying extra for? im an old V8 guy so im for it but they seem to be harder to find.

SOHC V6 is a delicate flower and the chain tensioners are weak. Excellent maintenance is required. If there is noise and a rattle on start up, pass. In fact, see my first comment.
5 speed automatics. Fluid changes every 30k to overcome design deficiencies.
Make sure it shifts and does not "flare" between 1st/2nd or 2nd/3rd.
Rear axle and wheel bearings. Listen close for the whine.
If it's clean, with records, drives right, sounds tight, makes no disaster sounds, buy and drive with pride.
