78-79 engines
Does anyone have a list of the engines that were available in the 78 & 79 F150's (it has the XLT Lariat Ranger trim package, if that matters on the older trucks).
Thanks,
TM

Torquemeister are you trying to figure out what motor you have in the truck? Is it a 4x4?
460 was only available in a 2WD
the 302 and the 351w have a bypass hose on the thermostat housing and also 6 valve cover bolt's
the 351m/400 has no bypass hose and has 8 valve cover bolt's
the 300 well you probably figured that one out
Also the trim package has no bearing on what motor could be in the truck

360/390s were last available in the 76 model year; 77 was the first year for the 351M/400

thanks for the replies!
i don't have the truck (not yet, anyway). Someone down the street is selling it - it's either a 78 or a 79 based on the front grille, so i was wanting an idea of what engine might be in it (the for sale sign says that it does not run - i don't want to go into it blind when i go look at it). my 86 is the oldest truck i've worked on, so i don't know much about any of the differences between the late 70's trucks.
Thanks again,
TM

The letter H as the 4th character in the Vin# is the 351M
S is the 400
J is the 460
Also,
The 351W was not in the engine line-up 78/79.
The only 351 was the 351M
There is enough info on this thread to identify it.

The older trucks are fun to work compared to newer crap.

WOW I certainly thought he had the W block in there. After looking at your chart I see they had the 302 in the F-150, must be what he had.
I also see in the link they offered the 351W in the F-100 chassis under the 351M class for Calif. only.

I dought the 351W was even produced in the late 70s.
beside they all ready had a 351, why have two different 351s optional?

"it has the XLT Lariat Ranger trim package"
you mean Ranger Lariat
they did not make a Ranger XLT Lariat
the trim options were
Custom
Ranger
Ranger XLT
Ranger Lariat (rare)
