Heres the story - Did not run truck for two days. Temp got down to 15 during the night but was 32 when tried to start. Did not have heater plugged in. Wait to start light was on for about 15 sec before it went off. Cranked motor w/in 7-10 sec it fired up but sounded like it was not hitting on all 8 cyl. ran for 3-5 sec then died(A lot of white smoke). turned off key then turned key on, the wait to start light only stayed on for 3-5 sec. Did this 3 times with same results before I cranked it again. this time, cranked for 20 sec with no starting. Stopped cranking and went thru wait to start cycle again(again, only stayed on 3 sec), this time, when cranking, could tell that batts running down. Charged Batt on 10 amp for 1 hr & plugged in heater. This time started, ran rough for 30 sec then smoothed out. Batts have 1000 crank amps and using a fuel additive.
Any and all comments welcome.
Stupid question, if I was a glow plug, where should I be. I can identify the fuel lines but not the plugs
Thanks guys
Just a little inboard of the injector with a wire on your head.
Follow the fuel line to the injector. Just slightly toward the center of the motor from the injector you should see a wire hocked to the glow plug. If you find one look at the next injector and see if you see another. There is one by each injector for each cylinder.
The air cleaner box will have to come off to get at a few of them....the back two on the left from front are no picnic.....under turbo.
Thanks Dave. If I had enough wires coming out of my head mayby people would think that I have hair!
Any thoughts on the starting problem? Should the batts run down that fast?
Why does it fire once then not fire again?
And is the wait to start light running right? When the trucks' running and I stop it, upon restart, the wait to start light seems to be the normal 10-15 sec.
thoughts, thoughts, I need thoughts said the neyby
You will have to check each glo plug to see if they are all good.It sure sounds like an air problem, maybe return tees. They are the rubber lines going from the caps on the injectors, look for leaks from them. There are kits available for them.
Sorry I did not get back sooner, dead hard drive in my computer.
As far as the barreries, you need to go to a bettery store that can load test them. When they test them you "MUST" unhook one of the battery grounds. If you do not isolate the batteries from each other one good battery will mask a bad one.
If both batteries are not in excellent shape the truck will not be dependable when it gets cold.
The white smoke and rough running at start makes me think you may have a one or more bad glow plugs.
