I'm not going to call your customer service department to express dissatisfaction with the 6.0 PSD. And I'm not going to post complaints on forum boards. The only way I would do those kinds of things is if you already had my money...but you don't...and you won't. I'm taking my F250 CC Lariat PSD business elsewhere.
BTW, my 98 EB Expedition has been an absolute dream, 122K, runs like new, and been in the shop only twice for very MINOR things. An excellent vehicle. What the heck happened with the 6.0? You guys really dropped the ball.
Sorry, got to go shopping at your competitors now.
Well, I've already got one...
and have had minimal problems with it during these first 18k miles...
and while it COULD be better (and it will be!),
it is still the best travelling vehicle around !
My point is that I will let my pocketbook do the talking for me by taking my money elsewhere. I was SO very ready to plop down $40K for a nice '04 F250 CC Lariat PSD, even had one picked out. And to top matters off I can buy below invoice with no haggling due to a corporate purchase plan. Literally, all I had to do was get a pen and start signing. BUT then I started doing due diligence research on the product. $40K is a lot of money.
I always expect to find some dissatisfied consumers no matter what the product is. Maybe it's just me but my informal research leads me to the opinion that there's an unacceptably high incidence of problems with this product and lots of variability on performance and fuel economy. And like I said that's just my opinion based upon reading many hundreds of posts on several forums (there's a bunch out there). And yes there are plenty of people that have no problems with their PSD's; the majority I suspect. But for a $40K product I expect something approaching 99% to have little or no problems. I think we're a little shy of that mark by more than a little.
In the end if I want to gamble with my money I'll go to Vegas. I don't gamble with my transportation. So... I'm not going to buy hoping to be lucky and then if I'm not lucky start a calling campaign. I'll just take my dollars elsewhere and avoid all that STUFF.
Everyone should reach their own conclusions and do what they feel is best. That's what I'm doing.
But for a $40K product I expect something approaching 99% to have little or no problems.
Sorry to break the news to you genius, but you are not going to find the above quote true with the other manufactors, and their trucks will run $40K also. I wish you luck with whatever new truck you choose, but I think if you truly did your research here you would see there are a lot of satisfied Ford PSD owners, most of them are out enjoying their trucks and grinning instead of reading posts on a Forum.
I think you guys are missing the point of his post. I believe he is completely legitimized with his post. He is researching a new purchase decision, and like a lot of us, because of the "DEAL" ford will do with some, we chose ford. If I knew I could drop 5-7k of the price of the other trucks, not sure a ford would be in my garage.
This guy researched it, and the better deal from ford is not good enough to purchase another considering all the potential problems. More power to him. Plus, maybe ford will see this and know, that good trucks, with great incentives are still not going to sell if you screw up one important aspect of it. Maybe, just maybe, ford will fix this motor to make it as good as we all know it can be.
Zoombah - I'm with you man, I've been lurking around the different diesel sites comparing notes on the big three. Honestly, the 6.0 PSD scares the c**p out of me. Too many postings about problems or posters telling us how great the engine is now that they have finally gotten it back from the dealer for the forth time.
Chevy is too ugly, I haven't read as many posts about bad engines, but I'm not convinced that having aluminum heads on a diesel is a good idea.
That leaves the Ram, the Cummins has been around a long time and has proven itself to be reliable. If it needs a tranny rebuild at 120 K, so be it. That's better than having your new truck at the dealer for weeks or waiting months and fighting for a buyback. Besides, I don't know if the Allison or Ford tranny is any better than the new Dodge. I suppose the Ram with the 6sp is the way to go, but I don't want to shift, I have a sports car for that.
The point is that this is Ford Truck "ENTHUSIASTS" forum. I like to share info with the other FTE's. I know a guy who has the other brands. I hear the same kinds of issues from him about the other diesels.
Buying a mass produced machine of any kind is bound to have some problems. Kinda like getting sick, it's part of living! So go be an enthusiast over on the other forums. If you want to pass a message on to Ford, call 313-322-3000 hit 0 then 0 again to get a live person (operator) and ask for Customer Relations.
It's real simple to me, if I were to buy a gas truck ( probably) then it's a F350 SRW with V10/6 speed. If it's a diesel I'm after- Dodge Cummins. I've never owned the 6.0L either, but with all the complaints I've heard from LOYAL Ford enthusiasts regarding this motor - I'd sit this one out thank you.
I've heard enough on both motors, no further research is necessary- Cummins all the way. It's not just in this forum that you hear horror stories regarding the 6.0L - go to any RV, off road/4x4 , construction, or general pickup forums, etc - you hear the same thing- problems on top of problems.
Ford is contracturally obligated to source diesel engines from Navistar for the SD pickups until 2012- but Ford is also in negotiations with Cummins, and Daimler (Detroit Diesel) to also provide diesels for both the F150 and SD trucks. Though Ford is still obligated to do business with Navistar, there is nothing to keep them from offering an additional diesel in their pickups for the consumer to choose from. How many here would honestly buy a 6.0L PSD if given the option of ordering a Cummins inline type motor instead?
My next door neighbor has the Cummins. It is noisy and not without problems. Maybe not the same problems but they have them. V10? There is a gas hog.
No, I consciously made a decision to buy the 6.0. Even after the Oct flash, it performs quite well. Besides, I bought a 3/4 ton truck, not a dragster, not a luxury car, I bought a truck. Even after losing PI, It is still quieter than my neighbors Cummins.
Go be enthusiastic over on the other vendor sites. I'll share info with the other Ford Truck Enthusiasts.
I like many here am not happy with my 6.0 but I know from my own exprience that the general is not as good as fmc , dodge has good engine but its still a dodge . Ijust hope they get it right soon . also cant stress enough how imporant it is to call ford #313-322-300+0+0 ask to speak to duncan or blain have your vin # handy, be brief tell them your problem not to much tech. they want to know and ask them to along info to engineering.
