well i have my 351 running finally in my 79 f150. it wasnt a hard swap .but still when i try to start the truck it still dosent fire.. when turnning.... but fires later do you guys think maybe a bad switch ..i changed the pick up ,,,control box so i eliminated them ...it has a new coil any ideals . if you want a alsome transcooler for your truck look under the hood of a 92 mazda mpv van .ifound one at the wreckers 30bucks and it work a1 ...thanks
well it fires after i let go of the key but dosent fire when its turning over . the timings set at 12degrees .and the distribuaters not 180 out i thought maybe its harder to start because i have a a332 ford racing cam in it . you should see the looks that the boys in there new hemi truck gave me after i smoked them . in the old beast .. hate those **** on ford stick ons that they put in there back windows ..and to add insult the dude came un glued when i asked him if that was a 5.2 magnium in the dodge .
May want to up your timing...say 18 BTDC. Also, here is a good test to determine if the timing is 180 out. Pull the # 1 spark plug wire. While trying to start engine...put the wire close to the spark plug. What color do you see? White or Blue? If white, then 180 out. If blue...then good on that.
Mine did this after a fuel pump replacement. Its the accelerator pump in the carb.
I know exactly what you are talking about too. You crank forever, then when you let go it blows out the carb, which would be a huge flame if it ever caught.
There are two feeds to the coil. One reduced voltage for running and one full voltage for starting. It sounds like you may be missing the start circuit. If this is the case try hot wiring it from bat. to coil and see if it starts that way.
so its not my imagination the truck should fire when its first turning over right . so it mite be the ignition switch the truck has over 200000 miles on it . the 302 that was in the truck lasted 200000 miles and the guy before me never changed the oil in the last 100000 or so miles....and still it lasted that long ..
My ignition switch went bad after 23 years. Ordered one from LMC and took care of the problem. Mine wouldn't start or run unless you hit the start position then moved it to the left a little. Had a bad habit of quiting if you hit bump also. I think it was about 25.00 or so for the part......cheap and easy fix for me.
well im pissed at this truck i tested the power at the coil its 5 volts i have 12volts at the white wire that feeds the contro box but nothing on the red wire with the key on so where do i look next
