i'm having a awful time finding a socket to take the axle nut off my rear axle. its a 72 f250 w/ a dana 60 rear (3/4 ton 2wd). apparently ford keeps the rite socket secret from the general public. theres no way for a parts store to look it up. the ford dealer told me they cant sell me theirs and to use an adjustable socket which i'm not about to buy, and motorcraft cust. service was about useless as well. anybody know where to find the exact socket? i might just use a hammer and chisel then turn it by hand but would like the rite tool . the nut isnt round with ears like some 4wd, its 6 sided and kindly rounded off and 2 1/2 " across from flat to flat. i did find a socket that looked just like it at autozone and was 2 1/2 " marked for ford vehicles but didnt fit for some reason. luckily i only borrowed it. surely this isnt as impossible as it seems i've got them for other vehicles. appreciate any help
I've had good luck with their service and you can't beat the price. I recently saw various axle nut sockets at Pep Boys but it's usually hit and miss with the local parts houses.

If the local autoparts store does not have the right socket, Check with your local Snap On dealer. He will know which one is the correct socket. It will be a little higher in price, but the quality will be better!
I don't know if that is a special size but when I needed a large socket for a pitman arm nut, I bought a 3/4 drive set at HF for $45. This stuff is so large that I doubt it will ever break.
