I am in the market for an ODB II code reader. I was hoping for some recomendations or first hand expierence with what kind to get. As far as price, I would like to get the best bang for the buck. So if anyone could give some sugestions I would appreciate it.
I bought the Autoxray 2000 ($199) because it was the only one I could find to read a 95 Ranger with obdII. There are some out there for 35-40 bucks all the way up to thousands. Depends on what you plan to do with it. If it's just to read your own codes, go with a cheaper model. If you are a mechanic and need to read lots of different models, get a better one.
I looked into the laptop/PDA options. They seem much more informative that the handheld units. I can see using them for performance issues and quarter mile diagnostics but... I just don't need it. I am not even sure if that is a good use for it but it seems like it may be...
Anywhoo.. I got an INNOVA 3100 OBD II Code Reader off ebay sometime ago for $110 shipped. I like it... I need to bring it to work tomorrow to help a buddy diag his brake light on his CHEVY.
BUT.. some places like Autozone will check a code for free (I think).
I have the Innova reader like Richard 4447. It pulls all my codes for my 95 Ranger (weird year). It's easy to use and has paid for itself several times over in less than a year.
