okay when you bought it did it run right?? when you swapped the wires did you use a book or do it wire by wire?? if not you may have swapped a pair of wires, i did the same thing when i changed a hose then put the wires on backwards. double check the wires and the gap on the points.
You might also need to check the dwell when you put tje new points in. This is just something I heard can be a problem. You might want to consider an electronic ignition. Alot less hassel. You can rent a timing light from the local parts store for free, just need a deposit at most stores. But definetly get your own when you can.
As far as the accelerator pump goes it may just be out of adjustment. You can adjust it with the bolt on top of that arm that goes into it. I would get the timing set first and make sure it holds. Being off even a little bit makes a huge difference.
well heres the deal I screwed my points up I found out, to anxious to get things rolling I guess,. So I dont back fire because of that any more. But now I have an exhaust leak from backfiring so bad and it poped the plug wire off my #7 and its knocking over there, I havent had time to play with my distibutor yet but hopefully thats all it needs. thanks for the help everyone I really dont have alot of time to read books about these things to learn about them, I have 2 jobs and a little girl so I dont have to much time for alot of things
High-miler engines are prone to have the timing gear & chain worn out.
Basically you remove the distributor cap and watch the rotor to see how many degrees the crankshaft turns before the rotor moves.
Process:
Get a power bar with socket to put on the crankshaft bolt.
remove distributor cap
Turn the crankshaft either driection until you see the roter turn.
NOW Most important:
Check position of power bar and while turning watch to see how many degrees the power bar moves To Just move the distributor rotor.
STOP
Now..turn the crankshaft the Other direction and observe the degrees the bar moves before the rotor moves.
10*,15* 30*
Whatever.
If the T chain is loose or stretched it will showup while doing this.
Also, If the chain is stretched a lot like 25-40* chances are you need to replace it because the chain has skipped a couple of teeth,
