I own a 1970 Ford truck F100 390 and its the best vehicle I ever drove.
My question is I have a poping noise coming from under the floor
{brake /gas pedal} when i turn right while going forward.
I replaced the ujoints,radius arm bushings and shocks.
I inspected the tie rods onthedriver side rod near the wheel had some play in a front to back motion but no side to side motion. {only 1/8 inch play}
I looked everywhere else for the sounds location but cant find it.
I can feal the poping in the floor but there is nothing under the floor on the driver side. Also the sound gets worse or pops more when i go over a bump while turning right.
A couple of questions for you: Did you replace both the inner and the outer radius arm bushings? THAT is a LOT of work, by the way!
Also, did you check your engine and transmission mounts?
Yes i did replace the inner and outer radius arm bushings.
But i havent looked at the mounts on the engine or trans. I dont even remmber if the mounts on the engine had bushings. Ill check for that tomorrow but it seems the mounts are to far up into the engine compartment to make a poping noise in the floor of the cab.
I have a similar popping sound coming from underneath somewhere but it only happens when turning left into a steep driveway. Only makes one pop and it's when the chassis flexes. I've also recently replaced all the front bushings, it popped before and now after.
When you hear that noise, is your steering wheel cranked all the way over to the right? There's a "stop" located at the axle tube (4x4) or somewhere near the king pin. What this does is prevent the wheels from turning too far. Basically, it's a bolt that is usually tack welded in place. If your wheel is cranked all the way over and you hit a bump, this bolt will rub making the noise. Let me know if I'm making any sense to you.
could the popping noise be a woodpecker living up underneath your truck? all that was living up under mine were wasps. that was the fastest i have ever moved in my life!!!
The noise isnt from turning to far because I can turn it about 1 or 2 turns on the stering wheel and it makes it {thats about a 90 deg turn}. {Im thinking it may be the tie rods or the king pin {i hope not the king pin} Thats all the steering and sup. I have left to replace except the chassie bushings I hope those are not bad also. But I have heard a kingpin go bad before and it was a bigger poping noise than this is al most like someone was banging against the wheel with a hammer. This noise is just a poping noise like a CV joint going bad {but i doint have a cv joint}
Another thing to check is the steering column alignment. If you live in a salt area, the cab mounts will rust out, causing the cab to settle, which in turn makes a kink or bind in the steering column.
I would check the rag joint too, to ensure it is still solid and complete as well. Also, check your gearbox mounting, that all the bolts are tight, and the pitman arm is still solidly attached (although I've never seen one come loose.)
Perhaps the best thing would be to have someone turn the steering wheel while you lay underneath the truck BUT BE SAFE!
Check the drag link's connection to the pitman arm as well.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info. Ill look at it first thing in the morning about the pitman arm and gearbox.
But what makes me think its not stering related before the pitman arm is that it only happens when the truck is moving.
Also when i turn right and go over a bump i keep a steady turn without moving the sterring wheel any and when i hit the bump it makes the noise.
I looked at the chassie bushings and they seem to be ok and no rust on any of the metal around it also.
If anyone has any ideas on what could it be please post
CrazYLarrY, I wonder if we're hearing the same popping noise? Does yours just pop once? Mine sounds like it's more in the chassis than suspension. Does it do it turning right into a driveway? If it does, could you see if it does it turning left too? I know this sounds stupid but hey, don't have much to work from. Mine pops when the left wheel leads into the driveway going up the incline while the back wheels are still on the street. That's why I think it has something to do with the chassis flexing.
