is there any advantage to using warn hubs in lieu of ford hubs the next time they need changing ?
I took my 99 SD 250 psd 4x4 to dealer for a persistant squeek coming from the left front. ford changed the hub out and said they can go bad.. this was $ 500.00 this was the third time i've had it in for the same thing
these are auto hubs "auto and lock" positions, with the switch on the dash, not the stick in the floor. Iwould happily sacrifice the convenience of auto hubs for more reliability.
also i noticed the hubs were installed wrong, the arrow no longer lines up with the dot on the outside rim. they appear to be "180 out" but still work OK...so far.
the warns are $ 180.00 a set (as opposed to $ 400.00 apeice) and are billed as an easy project to change. this is very appealing to me
please advise....
If you don't mind driving around with your hubs locked all the time, then go for it! Just make sure you plug up the vacuum lines. And be aware of tight, dry corners.
The warn hubs are a great upgrade to any stock hub.
Like Monsta said, you will loose your "auto" feature, but if you don't mind "locking them out" from outside the truck, the warns would work out well.
Cheaper and way more reliable.
If they replaced the entire hub and locking mechanism I could understand the cost $500.
Because the wheel bearing itself is $275 -300.
Then add the auto locking part it is more on top of that.
But beaware that the wheel bearings are a sealed unit non repairable . And was more than likely your source of the squeak ,causing the hub to misalign.
Ken, which vacuum lines need plugging? Switched out my hubs with Warn's when they died. Plugged the vacuum line under the hood that goes to both hubs. Is that all I need to do?
Being paranoid, but I don't want to screw anything up.
Thats all you need to plug !
follow the lines up to the vacum supply canister and plug them there.
Oh make sure you plug the fitting on your hub also you don't want dirt and moisture getting in there
I have the warns and love them(despite grenading one this last weekend) When I sold my autos I called the dealer so I could price them accordingly. The dealer wanted somewhere around $250 for both. I can't understand when I see you guys post that your dealers are getting so much for them.Anyway, the big difference I have found is that the autos seem to ratchet a bit when you hit that odd patch of traction or whatever. I know that may sound strange but buddy, when those warns get ahold of asphalt you had better be holding on. Maybe that is just the design and strength differences between the two. I bet you could get around $200 or so for your auto hubs. I sold mine for $200 even and they were used. The nice thing about the warns, too,is the lifetime warranty. I took the blown up one to my local parts house and they swapped it for free. Beats Ford's price anyday.
