I've noticed a front end "clunk" recently...jacked up the front right wheel today and found I could rock it back in forth (front to back I guess you'd say) quite a bit. So I looked underneath and the tierod (or drag link) end is very loose. There's a little write up on it in my Hyanes manual, and it doesn't sound too hard, but I wanted to hear from anyone else out there who's replaced these, to make sure it's something I can handle before I start.
If you've got any experience or tips on replacing tierod ends, I'd love to hear from you.
Replacing tie rod ends is within the ability of a good hammer mechanic. You need the right tool (proper size pickle fork) and a suitable hammer to do the job.
I would apply penetrating oil to the joints that you plan to break loose several days before doing the job. If this is the first time, I'd also have someone else available to help out - at least for moral support.
Before removing (unscrewing) the tie rod ends, take some measurements so that you can install the replacement rod ends in about the same position. Then get the truck aligned ASAP.
