Ok maybe I'm pushing my luck here but has anyone ever followed the air intake tube for your stock air box? Mine is the one that runs next to my battery and sucks air from the grill. They had two 1/4" holes for the air to flow through. What the heck is that about? I cut mine out to the size of the intake tube. This leads to my question, with a cone filter where will it suck the air? I'm guessing it would be the air inside the engine bay. So if you have a flat pan set up which sucks cool air from the outside of the truck or a cone filter setup which sucks 2-3 times the amount of air but its warmer from the engine bay which would provide more benefit, the flat pan K&N setup or the home made Cone filter? I'm going to assume your response is the cone filter so I'm on my way to Napa today to buy the parts. I just wanted to bounce this off the people who no more than I do. Yes that would be all of you!
Thank you all very much for your counsel and advice, it really is appreciated!
good question and one that is widely debated. most agree, that warm air is bad..cold air is good. But several members tried some "experiments" with the outside air verses the inside air. The conclusion was that when driving down the road, the ambient air temp inside the engine bay was only 10-20 degrees higher than that outside the bay. and that by the time the air went thru the intercooler and everything it was probably about the same as the outside air....thus more air or just about the same temp is better than less air. I still have the air duct on the side of the battery to send air back by my tymar setup, hopefully helping more fresh (outside) air in.
Well I just made me one today I used a Fram Extra Life #CA9345 $12.97 at Wal-Mart and a 3" PVC conecter from Lowes $2.70 with threads on one end that fit real tight (My oil filter wrench sliped on it ) in the filter and the hose and clamps that come off the factory air box fit over the PVC I put the battery cover back on and let the filter lay in what was left after unbolting the factory box and used a ware tie on the sincer. It seamed a way to easy and to boot it was TN Oringe there is some of the noise from Turbo under the hood when I let off but not to bad. At least no more K&N I hope you can guess at my spelling half the time I don't know even what I've wrote

bravwolf...I think you'll like it...I was very hesitant at first....did more reading in this forum and others, did alot of my own research and then decided to go for it...haven't looked back! I don't know from what you've said, but make sure that your filter doesn't sit on the fender well (robbing it of air surface). Also it gives it something to rest against to keep it from pulling on your turbo intake (not that it would matter, unless it came lose ) to do this, I went to tractor supply and got a small rubber know that had a screw coming out of it (I think it was some luggage rack foot). got two 4.5" torque clamps and put them together. drilled a hole in one side big enough to attach the rubber foot to and put the clamp around the top of the filter. now it rest nicely on the rubber foot, not touching the wheel well or anything else. Air Supply Inc., also sells just the clamp that the tymar comes with, but for $20 ( by the time you pay shipping) I was pleased with my $2.50 device.
I'll try that right now I've got it tied by the hose to the bottom of the old air box. Did you take the whole bottom off or leave it?If you did what about the battery box? I was going to see if I could take it off but today it was pretty cold to be outside a working. They say the the wind chill will be 0 to -10 in the morning just went with synthetic Rotella been wanting to see how she starts cold wish me luck.

I started today collecting the supplies to put my homemade intake together. Got a Fleetguard #AH1141 filter that looks like it is going to work fine but was unable to locate a 45 degree 4" piece of exhaust pipe. Local custom exhaust shop said most automotive shops only handle up to 3". I too thought about going with the PVC (and still might) but I got to thinking about a piece of that hard plastic breaking off and being sucked into the turbo and decide to continue looking for the metal pipe. Hope to find something that will work and make the switch this weekend...
I worried about it my self and even tried to find a chrome extenion pipe and couldn't find 1 big enought . I just used 1 peace of PVC and it's at the filter. I know 1 is all it would take! PVC is pretty hard to break anyway thats what I keep telling my self. I think the TV missed the weather its 16 this morning and the wind is still. I hope you find your pipe I just drove mine a few miles last night but I all ready like it. Well lets go to work today is Monday fer me
I bought the tymar filter and what a difference it made. I have read alot about the guys building their own filter setup, I remember someone saying not to lay the filter on the fender because it will rub a hole in it.Just trying to pass along some info don't want anyone to ruin their engine because they want to save $.
Ed, I got my 4" tube from an exhaust shop. I clamped the piece of tube into my exsisting flex house and the the filter fit perfectly where the old one was. Yours is a 96 so it should fit exactly the way mine did. If you want I can email you a picture of it later.

well...I took the airbox off the bottom of the battery tray.... I didn't think there was enough room for the filter to sit and didn't want there to be a problem with the filter getting air on the bottom. So, I cut off the engine side of the battery tray(where the airbox sat on top of it) and left the fender side (just in case I wanted to go back stock. I left the battery box there...including the fresh air snorkle up to the fender -- hopefully so that it would get some fresh air back there to the filter. Even with the battery box, there is pleny of room, so I just left it. Hope this helps ya...if you need any more info..just ask!
